After years of using reg real oil I finally decided to go with full syn.I went to my NAPA store and was able to get filter and Valvoline 20-50 full syn for better than half price of HDs price.
as far as I'm concerned. as long as you use a quality v-twin motor oil the brand doesn't matter. they are all good.
I use straight dino oil from the moco for, well, since I started riding in the 70's with no oil related issues.
have never used synth oil.
Why v-twin oil? What does it do that regular oil or race oil doesn't?
Hello all,
I have gone through about 6 oil and trans fluid changes since I've owned my Fatboy. I have been using the Mobil 1 V twin full synthetic. My question is; Will it matter what oil I use as long as it stays V-twin Full Synthetic?
I have been testing Mobile 1 full synthetic in my Harley, two new cars from the get go and 3 other cars I purchased new but are older than 2005.
All with excellent results. One, a 2005 CRV that looked like new under the valve cover at 100K when I adjusted the solid lifters and changed plugs.
I just run 15W-50 Mobile 1 in the Harley motor. Has 50K on it and still runs like new when I parked it. What I ran in a Z28 for 130K till it lost a head gasket in the aluminum head. When I replaced it, it also looked like new under valve covers and little cylinder wear.
I don't run synthetic high detergent in Harley transmission or primary. Mainly since oil engineering says non filter gear boxes should use non detergent gear oil. What Formula Plus is.
I also don't do anything special. I run it to the suggested miles in the owners manuals.
Sure seems to me good stuff. And in the 5 quart containers, good deal. Especially if you catch their rebates.
Well Ray, guess your seeing what gives on an oil thread.
Anyway, as a new member.
Welcome
Hope you continue to enjoy your ride here with us on the HDFORUM.
Only as a suggestion, but very important, create a signature line similar to mine on your bike with year, model, and all the letters Harley assigned to the bike. It will appear at bottom of your post.
You can also add a favorite picture to the signature line.
Doing this will be helpful if you ask a question or to someone asking a question. All Harleys aren't the same with many changes and variations over the years.
You can also add a favorite picture for an Aviator postage stamp you see at the top left of your post.
