Default Security systems on early 2000s models

Hello gentlemen and women,
My name is Stephen I own a 2004 fxstbi Custom Softail. I’m really hoping I’m not alone on this, but with regards to the security system installed on all of our bikes back then and now Harley Davidson has informed me that since they’ve discontinued the alarm system in all the older models they have no way of telling me the codes to the alarm that set the automatic arm and the manual set also the valet option and how to disarm while it’s being trailered and several other options. I used to have a small manual that I got somewhere in my travels. Now to my Question. I had thought at one time that I’d like to try the auto arm feature instead of manual so I changed it and it’s fine except I’m finding it to be more of a hinder then help. In order for me to do anything to my bike it needs to be disarmed mine is also audible so it screamed at me every time I touch my bike and turn it off. There’s no problem but it rearm itself every 30 seconds so I need to leave the ignition on all the time if I’m working on it so I won’t rearm itself. I’d love to get the codes for this alarm . I’ve got to think that a lot of us have this alarm and possibly have the codes or the pamphlet that I had or just know how to set it back to manuel I’d be happy with that so if anybody has any answers for me that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading this book that I just put out there.

A dealer isn't your only option, especially for older bikes...

If you can access a 2004 Softail Electrical Diagnostic manual, it will tell you your options, and how to achieve them. There is usually a method to change things without a tech tool on these older bikes. It can be a slow, tedious process, but entirely possible.

Since you have an ECM with your EFI, you could also find someone with a Techno-Research Centurion Pro who should be able to disable, or change your alarm set-up.

I have a 2003 Softail Electrical Diagnostic Manual, but I know that in 2004, there were changes to how/when the ECM, TSSM, and Speedometer work together and communicate with each other. Due to that, I wouldn't feel comfortable posting that information, hoping it will work for your 2004...

Hopefully someone with a 2004 Year manual can advise.....

In the short term, your audible siren is an ad-on module to the TSSM (Turn Signal Security module). With the alarm disabled, you can just unplug the siren. Then, when the alarm is set off, you won't get the siren, just the flashing lights and start circuit disabled.

Here's a copy of the install instructions that shows a pic of the module and its plug under the rear fender cover.

Thank you so much for responding.
i know your right about the changes in 04 but I’m pretty sure the security system stayed the same other then maybe the way it communicates to the eco. Does your alarm set automatically? Have you ever changed it from manual to auto or to valet. It’s all code through the blinkers and the ignition. Same well similar thing when your key fob battery dies there a way to disarm and ride home. Have you not done any of that?

Both my 2001 and 2003 are active systems. I need to activate and then deactivate the security system with the button on my FOB. I didn't know you could change them to passive activation (auto), and wouldn't want it to auto activate, but that's just me... Most times I don't set the alarm. In fact it's probably been 10+ years since I have activated it...

I thought only the international TSSM had passive activation, and it needs a different FOB also...

In any case, if the domestic alarm TSSM can be set to passive and then back to active, the process should be in your HD Electrical Diagnostic Manual.

Try this. I have these procedures saved in my phone. I'm not sure what model year they're for.

To add to the others great info. Also as Mr. H stated - It is an unbelievably PITA item to do.
Here are the notes I ended up using to find my code. I got it and praised the stars I got that far and never attempted to change it. I wrote it down in about a thousand spots so I never have to go through that process again. You may have better luck as I am a dinosaur and hate dealing with crap like that code stuff!
Here are my notes, hope the above info and maybe these will get you set.

RETRIEVING YOUR SECURITY PIN WITH A "HD KEY FOB with a Button" for early models with Turn Signal Security Module - TSSM

1. Turn the run button to "OFF"

2. Turn the ignition to ON, then OFF, then ON, then OFF, then ON and then immediately push the left turn signal twice and the turn signals will flash, then immediately press the BUTTON ON THE KEY FOB TWICE and the turn signals will flash again.

3. Now you are in the programming mode. Remember, in my case, there is not a code displaying in the odometer and the red security key is not on or flashing but once you start the process, the key will appear.

4. At this point, there are two things that can be done. You can retrieve your security code or you can put in a new one. Once you run thru the process a few times, you'll say, oh, I get it.

5. There will be 5 digits involved and the digits 1-9 will be used, keep track of them, write them down because the only thing that you will be going by is a blinking light. In this example I'm going to use my birthday 71853 as the security pin.

6. OK, here we go, you are in the programming mode. KEY FOB in hand. Press the left turn signal once. The red security key will flash the number of times of the first digit. My light flashes 7 times, press the key fob button twice, the turn signals will flash 1-2 or 3 times, wait until they finish. The first # is now saved and now you are ready to find out your second #.

7. Press the left turn signal once and the red security will flash the number of times of your second #. My light flashes 1 time. Press the KEY FOB button twice and it's saved. Turn signals flash, etc...

8. Press the left turn signal once and the red security light will flash the number of times for your third #. My light flashes 8 times. Press the KEY FOB button twice and it's saved. Turn signals flash, etc...

9. Press the left turn signal once and the red security light will flash the number of times for your fourth #. My light flashes 5 times. Pres the KEY FOB button twice and it's saved. Turn signals flash, etc......

10. Press the left turn signal once and the red security light will flash the number of times of your fifth #. My light flashes 3 times. Press the KEY FOB button twice and it's saved. Turn signals flash, etc.....

11. Turn the ignition key to OFF and you are FINISHED. In my case, the five #'s that I wrote down corresponding to the red security light flashing are 71853.

*** Now to check to see if the security pin # 71853 will disable the security. Remember, during this process, the odometer is not going to display any #'s and you are going to have to keep track and focus on the code that you enter because the red security key will be flashing rapidly and it does not correspond with the number of times that you press the left turn switch while you are entering your code. The red security light will be flashing rapidly throughout the entire process and after you enter your last digit, the red security key will turn off.***

12. Here we go: This process works with my RUN button being ON or OFF.
Turn on your security by pressing the KEY FOB BUTTON once or it's possible that your security may already be on which is indicated by the red security key slowly blinking.

13. Turn your key to the accessory position and immediately hold down both turn signal buttons and release them and the red security key should start flashing rapidly.
[ By the way, pressing the right button SAVES your input when you are programming]

There are not any pauses in this process, so using the security code 71853 as an example: Here we go:

press the left turn signal button 7 times, right button once
press the left turn signal button 1 time, right button once
press the left turn signal button 8 times, right button once
press the left turn signal button 5 times, right button once
press the left turn signal button 3 times, right button once

*** Your red security key should now go off and your security is now disabled ***

I just received your PM. I'm glad my procedures resolved your issues. Hopefully, anyone else searching the forum for resolution will find this thread.

Not true. Detailed instructions are not shown in the 2004 online owner's manual. It wasn't until 2006 models that the detailed instructions were available online.
