Default TC 96 vs 103

Any major differences in the TC96 and TC103 in a softail that I should be aware of if out shopping for one? Is the compensator still an issue with the 103
Thanks

HD "upgraded" the compensator in the 2006 Dyna and all other models in 2007. That "upgraded" compensator had quite a few issues all the way until 2014 with the Rushmore Touring bikes.

There were several versions and updates to that compensator. Finally in 2014 with Rushmore bikes, they came up with a version that has been far less problematic than its predecessors.

If your bike model didn't come with it, you can add it as a retrofit kit. It is the current Screamin' Eagle Big Twin Compensator for about $400. There are a couple different part numbers/retro fit kits, depending on the fitment.

Both the 96 and 103 are good engines. Many different years/models had quirks, but there are really no problems that don't have solutions.

While shopping, if you suspect a comp problem, I would deduct $$ from the asking price to be able to get the latest comp kit. If all else on the bike and with the deal looks really good, a noisy comp would not scare me away from the purchase, ...

Good luck with your bike shopping.... it can be part of the fun..!

To me, the stock 103HO I had in my 14 triglide was better than the 96” with a 26H set of cams. If you want to leave it stock the. A 14 or newer with a 103HO would be my choice.

Once again many owned TC96 and103's ran them a lot of miles and never had any compensator issues. So the reason are not what many claim.

Same for my 2008 Heritage Classic (96) and 2016 Ultra Classic (103).

Cheers fellas. On the softails are many components interchangeable between the two engines/drivelines? Cam covers, rocker boxes, primary covers etc?

You can look at on line parts manuals.

I'll admit I have trouble keeping all the subtle differences straight in my head, so forgive me if I am remembering this wrong....

The difference between the Twin Cam 96" and the Twin Cam 103" are the cylinders and the pistons.... the bottom ends (crank/stroke), heads, and drivetrains are the same...

If my memory is failing me, I will be corrected shortly...
