oil leak
When its full its probably blowing out the breathers, When its only just above the 1/2 full mark its not blowing out the breathers. (its OK to run it 1/2 full, In your service manual it says to only add oil when its down to the add oil mark on your dipstick)

Define puddles....?
My idea of a puddle is a lot of oil to leak from anywhere...
Externally vented breathers can definitely leave spots on the floor.
OEM vented breathers can take awhile to saturate the lower section of the air cleaner, but once it starts to drip, can definitely mark their territory..
A oil leak that leaves "puddles" needs to be found and dealt with... Usually, if it leaks a "puddle" it doesn't just stop...
Unless of course you run out of oil.... 
I would clean up the engine really well with a degreaser. Then go for a ride or two until you see a puddle under the bike.
Then get down on the floor and follow the trail of oil from the puddle, to the engine/primary/transmission, and up to its source....
