There's more to it than cosmetic, as a person or two have already pointed out. The Softail has a counterbalanced motor, and it also doesn't have any exposed shocks. Now that I've got a Softail, I have found most shocks to sort of look unsightly.
As far as cosmetics, one of the biggest things to consider is that rear fender. It's a personal preference, but I've notice that people either love or hate that back fender on the WG. It's like they tried to make it like a softail fender, but it fell short. Go see one in person, and looking straight on from the back and you'll see what I mean. Or, you won't see what I mean- and you'll be in the "love it" category.
Rode both ,,, love both,,,, and have fellow riders who have W.G.'s ...I bought the train!!! And when it comes to turnin heads the train will.. The WD is a beautifull machine rite outa the box ,,and a nice ride also..Can't go wrong with either... And personally i like like the duce..The fender is sic!! Love that!!!
i had a very similar debate on these boards (dyna v ST) and went ST. I will tell you why.
Number one reason was fit and feel of the bike. The softail came with a lot of things (such as forward controls) that the dynas I was looking at did not come with. I also think the rear wheel and fender of a softy is FILTHY
Next thing was the blacked out engine block. I love the look.
Last thing for me was customization. The potential of a ST is almost unlimited. I immediately put a more comfortable seat and some baby apes on my Train to make it the best combination of every bike I was looking at. Comfort of a custom, look of a Train.
I would have to say BOTH!! That is a hard decisionI might have gone with a Train if while I was hunting for a bike I would have seen one...but, I ran across none.
I debated the samething between Dyna and Softail. after sitting on both, looking at options for after market parts, and ride. I went with the softail hands down.
Two of my favorite bikes. In fact I was deciding between the NT and the WG when I bought. You can not go wrong with either choice. Advice above about looking at them and seeing where you want to go with the bike is great advice. I chose the WG doing exactly that. But really they are both great bikes. Happy shopping and hope your riding on one of them soon.
