Default 2001 fuel tank differences F.I. vs Carb

I am looking at a set of 2003 tins online for my fuel injected 2001 FXSTSI. I don’t know what the differences are between f.i. and carbed tanks. Can anyone explain this to me? Thanks.

The 2003 EFI Fuel Tank is the same part number as the 2001 EFI fuel tank. It is part #61625-01E, which is no longer available. As long as you get the 2003 EFI tank, it should fit. The carb tank won't work for EFI as there would be no opening in the center to install all the EFI fuel stuff....

As mentioned, the carb tanks have no opening in the center of the tank. On the carb tank, the float level goes in via the left side fake gas cap, and the fuel petcock goes in from the bottom of the tank.

Here is the tank for the 2001 FXSTS w/carb, #62180-00D;

The EFI tanks have a big opening in the center of the tank to allow for the installation and removal of the fuel pump, fuel pump sock, regulator, filter and float level.

Here are the tanks for the 2001 FXSTSI EFI and then the 2003 FXSTSI EFI, both part #61625-01E:

I hope this information helps...

Good luck with your new tank...

As Hattitude says, 2003 EFI tins on a 2001 EFI will work but if you look at carby tanks, no.

Get info as usual Hattitude. Side note related question for you. Does all the EFI "stuff" in the tank take up space so that my 03 Fatboy 5 gal tank fill is only like 4.3 gal max and a carb 03 tank would take the full 5 gal?

Truthfully, I have no idea.....

IMHO...

It would stand to reason that the "stuff" would displace "some" fluid (gas)... but how much I wouldn't dare to guess. Seriously doubt it's 7/10 of a gallon... but... I just don't know

If you ever get an old EFI tank" guts set-up" in your hands, a bucket of water, and some careful measurements, would give you and approximate guess... There are also pieces of metal inside the EFI tank that the "guts" are mounted to... changes with the year, model, and size of the tank.

Also... I doubt that any 5 gallon tank has a full five gallons of "useable" fuel... Just too many variables ie: tank mount (how level is it?), vent hose location, fittings, etc

I pay attention to my bike's fuel gauges and use them for around town refueling. But if I'm pushing the limits, or there is any question, I go by the mileage on the trip odometer, which I reset every fill-up.

For example, on my 2001 FXSTS Springer, I have gone 158 miles around town, and never had to turn the petcock to "reserve". That bike averages 40.9mpg.

Hope this info helps...

Looking at part numbers is probably one of the best things in general. When people were converting FI to carb they were putting in different bongs, some kind of conversion. Could google fi to carb conversions, and see if helps you and if you would want to do that.

Absolutely helps Hattitude, I agree with everything you've written, and if you don't know I doubt anyone does. It's just alway puzzled me why tank (even when run out) never takes more than 4.3 gal.
Much appreciated my man, keep your knees in the breeze!
