Default 2015 FLS Speedometer mis-behaving

Hey, while riding to Strugis this year my speedometer starting acting wierd. 2015 FLS Slim. The speedometer starts off reading correctly or close enough, an hour or so into the ride the values are much lower than I know that I am traveling. I stop and get gas and stuff, it works fine then starts dropping off again. I am going to ride the speed that I am riding so it is not a show stopper but it is annoying/troubling. Anyone know how I can correct this issue?

Have you checked for codes that might point you in the right direction...?

If no applicable codes, I'd first check the speed sensor on the transmission. It's #42 in the parts pic below. It's located just inboard of the transmission dip stick.

Pull it and see if it's dirty (covered with metal filings/debris). If so, clean it, reinstall it, and see if it now works.

If it's not dirty, check the wires and connector to the speed sensor closely, carefully. Check for damaged wires and or dirty, loose connector.

FWIW...

Here is a pic of a dirty speed sensor. I have actually seen one with more debris on it that was still working, but this pic will give you an idea about what you are looking for..

Let us know how this checks out....

Check your speed sensor first. It's on the transmission and can get heat-soaked on long rides, causing the signal to drop out. If that looks fine, the wiring from the sensor back to the speedo can get brittle and crack, especially near the rear cylinder where it's hot. A bad connection acts up once everything gets heat-soaked. It's a common issue on that model.

However, It is wierd. I had a 3 hole change at HD before I went to Srurgis. You think they would have said something. For the money they charge....

Oh, you were serious...

Sorry, but at most dealerships, the fluid changers are the bottom of the food chain....

I also seriously doubt that at some dealerships, the list of things "checked" at the various service intervals, is actually accomplished...

Cynical, yes...... but my cynicism has been well earned over the years...

I was kinda joking, kinda serious. I asked them to do a quick check as I was about to ride 4000 miles in a week and half. I say it is weird becuase no problem before the HD work, but probably coincidence.

What did you find? - Dirty, bad wire, just replace it and all good now ? Nice to know the actual "fix" for all the rest of us whose turn will come sometime.

Bad sensor. I removed it (procedure from this forum https://www.hdforums.com/how-tos/a/h...-sensor-412957) . Tested the resistance with a mutimeter (it was sporadic). Ordered another sensor and reinstalled. I have not had a long ride since I replaced it but the short rides have been fine.
