New VS Used
Price. The sticker price was quite a bit less than the bigger engine bikes. It was also plenty fast for me. I'll be 70 in a couple months and I don't need to tear *** around anymore. LOL.
but it is all about what you like and feel comfortable with..

I'm sure there are lots of members that have had both over there...
Your initial stated goal was "hot rod"
There's absolutely no comparison between a gen2 M8 and anything earlier IMO
If you compare to a twin-cam its ridonkulous. My 2025 Fat Boy was way faster than my 2009 twin-cam with no mods at all, and the twin-cam was a stage 3
Since them I've done stage 2 on the 2025 and its a solid 20% faster than it was stock.
I loved that 2009 Fat Boy for 16 years, but if I had to go back to it today I'd hate it
If you compare to an older M8 model, the gen2 M8 addressed a bunch of the issues that gen1 had, as well as adding more CI and some added tq and hp.
Doing a stage 2, the stock valve springs in gen2 can handle a lot more lift than gen1. There are other improvements in gen2 as well, manifold, injectors, venting, etc. I cant recall them all
For my money the extra couple grand for new is worth it
