Unfortunately, I got the stock exhausts, but plan on changing. thankx for the tip though AK_Hog_Herder. I realized that when looking at the 2 scoots side-by-side. Noticed the Heritgae pipes were below the foot peg.

I was planning on buying used Heritage saddlebags which would be more cost effective for me.

I got a measurement from 14"-17" on the bag height. I was planning on using a 2:1 pipe (like a Supertrapp SuperMeg), which I gather would give me the clearance??? Should I just wait and purchase my exhausts first??

I mounted Heritage Springer bags on my 06 Deluxe but decided to replace the Struts. The good thing is that the Fender is already drilled with the hole in the proper location and all you have to do is buy the bracket that mounts on the inside of the fender so you can screw the bolts in.

Someone else here on the forum just drilled the extra hole. It won't mess up the integrity or strength of the strut.

I use Bubba's Brakes detachable type mounts.

Ordered them from Zanotti's Harley. They were about $60 each. I just wanted it to be right and didn't want to drill into the struts.

I'll check the invoice when I get home and can give you all the part numbers you will probably need if you would like.

Mike,
I put my hand under the fender but I did not feel any bracket in there. My '06 Deluxe seems to just have the strut on the outside, covered with a chrome cover. If, as you say, the fender is already drilled, then it seems all I need do is correctly mark the chrome cover and drill through it. I was wondering what secures the bolts, since there is no nut involved on the inside of the fender. Seems to me that the strut itself is threaded. So I figure I can drill through and if needed I can put on a nut instead of threading the hole I drill in the strut. And if the fender itself has a pre-drilled hole, then it may very well be that the strut is also pre-drilled under the chrome cover. Or, am I very confused?

I have little choice but to drill through. The easy brackets that are sold for my purpose set the bags off somewhat from the bike and give it an appearance that does not appeal to me. Since I see that the front holes of the bags and the struts are aligned perfectly, it seems that the best course is to simply drill through for the rear hole mount and use a nut. Hopefully, the chrome cover will not crack on me, I am going to begin with very small holes using a carbide bit. What do you think?

Also, it seems that I can drill the bag itself at the proper point and not have any need to drill the strut. Actually, that makes better sense, no?

I drilled my strut. No problem. I used the double nutted inside fender mount from HD. I forget the correct term and number for it. I will look it up sometime.[8D]

The hole is definetly there but the bracket they use on the inside of the fender plugs it.The bracket is threaded so the new bracket would have 2 threaded holes.

The best I can do without confusing you more is scan the parts page that shows this for both the Deluxe and Heritage and then you would understand.

I'll try and get acopy of it up on here tomorrow or I can email a copy to you.

I forgot to tell you. If you do drill new holes in your fender struts, you will need to put spacer behind hole. The factory holes have them (spacer) welded on. If you do not use spacer the strut will cram against fender when you tighten up saddle bag bolt. There is supposed to be a slight space between fender and fender strut. I think i used stainless washers on mine with some black silicone adhisive on them to keep them from falling out the next time I remove bolt. I also used some black silicon adhievisve on the inner fender bracket to keep it in place next time. It is easyer to do this with back tire off but I did mine with it on. [8D].

I would agree with the comment above to take a look at Boss Bags. They make a couple of beautiful bags for the Deluxe with the basketweave to match. They are linned with the plastic to hold their shape and have the quick release brackets that come with the bags. Its the classy way to go.
