Default Recommendations for Engine Guards and More

Hi -

Just bought the Softail Deluxe and I am thinking of adding engine guards. I don't want to change the look of the bike, but I can't find guards made for the Deluxe. Are there Deluxe specific guards, and if so, can you tell me the part number?

If not, what do you suggest - there are lots of choices in the HD catalog.

Also, I'm not a fan of bags on the Deluxe, but I do occassionally have need of something the carry small stuff. I have a windshield, but I don't like using it, so a windshield bag isn't an option. The Deluxe bags are OK, but are kind of small given the height of the mufflers. The top mounted bag requires a special mount and in person looks overly large for the bike (my opinion). The various "roll" bags HD offers are fabric, or at least the ones I've seen are. Does anyone have a suggestion for a simple, small leather bag that will mount on the standard Deluxe rear rack?

Finally, I'd like to get a backrest for the wife. The one that is made for the Deluxe looks reasonable, detachable and designed to blend in with the bike. It seems that they also make a backrest pad that matches the bike design. The local dealer doesn't have any in stock, and I'd like to hear from anyone who actally has one - the catalog photos make it hard to determine how it looks in "real life".

Thanks for the help, I'm loving the ride of the bike. My wife is very happy - she found the Dyna LowRider a bit too "tingly", but likes the ride of the Softail. Thanks for the recommendations - it made a difference and the end result is a better bike for my needs, much appreciated.

I tingle every time I ride the Low, but that's why I got it.
Bags will make you crazy. I finally opted for some throw overs because I didn't want to relocate my tail lights. A mistake on my part because I like bags and I seldom take them off.
The bag that has served me best is a Willie & Max sissy bar bag that I picked up off Ebay for $19.00. It's on and off in seconds and holds a lot of chit - as in 2 sixpacks of O'doul's and a bag of ice. Here's a pic:

I will be selling the throw-overs. They are top quality leather slants with a box top for more room, PM me if you or anyone else has an interest. They are about a month old.

Great info - thanks to all, especially helpful to see the pictures of the different guards on the prior postings.

I had a bag made by spike95 that mounts to my risers. It's the perfect size for a phone, pack of cigs, glasses & gloves. works with or without the winshield which was the plan. Super high quality work and highly recommended. Still trying to get decent pictures of it. It closes with velcro which makes it easy to get into with the winshield on. I also have the Nostalgic engine guard.

dunk,
I notice the pipes on that beautiful bike of yours. I am also inclined to have the pipes goes to each side. Was that a big story to do on the Deluxe? I have an '06.

Another option is the nostalgic engine guards on my springer, they are made for the old school lookf of the springers & deluxes, the deluxe bags look nice Ithink, the problkem w/ harley unless you have a bagger none of the bags are very big,

It sounds like you should have just bought a Heritage.

I was in the same boat.... the Heriatage was more practical.... but DANG I love the DELUXE!
I will add the bossbags... (www.bossbags.com) after I change the exhaust...
The backrest and pad are good... G'friend likes it BUT the stock passenger seat had to go !
I replaced it with the Deluxe Touring rear seat... MUCH better reviews!
