G'day all, I hope there is someone out there that can answer my question. I'm sick as a dog so I don't know if I'm thinking straight or not....
I purchased a black inverted front end for my '07 Night Train, part no. 48646-06A and a 25mm axle kit, part no. 42136-07.
Anyway when I go to screw the axle into the "insert, axle" the threaded component in the left hand fork (item 12, Figure 1 Inverted Fork Instillation Instructions)I'm met with considerable resistance and I can not screw the axle in the required depth. Upon inspection of the axle andinsertthe shaft behind theaxle's thread would appear that it's an interference fit with the bore of the insert.
I checked and double checked part number numbers, there are only two HD inverted front ends, either chrome or black. There are only two axle options, 3/4" (pre '07)or 25mm ('07 onwards) andI believe that both these axles would have identical dimensions at their threaded ends where they screw into the insert, so HD only have to manufacture the one insert.
Rich,
I would try sizing the threaded hole with a tap and die set first. Make sure it's the size it's supposed to be. You gave a 3/4 inch size and a 25 mm size. Get a 3/4 inch bolt and try and see if it fits, or try a 3/4 nut over the axle threads to see if it was done with the wrong thread setup.
If it's the right threads...25mm...run the tap and die all the way in to make sure it clears completely. Also double check and see if there is maybe a spacer that is supposed to be included?
Dan
I just installed my front end last week. There is no difference in the threaded ends on either the 25mm or the 3/4".......the 25mm is tapered down to 3/4 on the threaded side of the axle, so you are correct, the insert is the same.I lightly tapped my axle with a rubber mallet to get the threaded end to seat in the left side. I couldn't get the threads starteduntil I tapped it a bit. I didn't notice any interference. It was really a very easy install. It took me about4 hours from start to finish.
