i have had a few people tell me not to get apes because of the way the bike will handle, but i have wanted a softail with apes ever since i saw renegade (probably sounds cheesy)
I'm 6'1" and my bars are 16 inch Wild One's that are powdercoated semi gloss blackand sit on1 inch risers. My hands rest a couple of inches above my shoulders. The Wild One's are very comfortable to me.
I debated a while on the height issue. I decided to go with 9.5" Chubby's on my springer. I don't really consider them apes even if that's what they call them. At 6' it puts my hands just below my shoulder height. I feel I made the right choice with them. They are very comfortable on short hops as well as long hauls and I think they look great too. I have some pics in my gallery if you want to take a look.
I am the same height and have the same bars on my '07 FLSTSC. Although I think, aesthetically, 12.5's would be better, the 9.5's are the perfect riding position for me - just below shoulder height. If I went with the higher bar, I think I would have to reach too far to be comfortable on the longer rides I enjoy. I have gone back and forth on this issue, though.
