i'm 5'11 how tall should i go? i want to go as tall as possible but not extreme. what brand is recomended? i want black that that will match vivid black too. and what size risers
Sit on your bike, stick your arms out and have someone measure where you feel most comfortable.
I'm a lil over 6'1" and I run 16" apes and it puts my hands just above my shoulders which is illegal here in Illinois, but F$%k 'em. Maybe you'll want to run 15" or less on the stock risers. No need to get new risers if your stock ones are fine.
As for bars, lots of people like the Wild 1's, but I got my no-name barsoff Ebay and they're awesome...and a lot cheaper. They're 16" apes, 1 1/4", drilled and knurled. You'll want them drilledfor a clean look and knurled so they stay put in the riser clamps. I'm probably going to Nash Gimps this Winter though...or some other knock off I found...or just powdercoating mine.
I'm 6' and I have 16's and my arms are about shoulder height. I haven't noticed any discomfort from having them that high. For me, they are just the right height.
But I'm eventually going with wild1 12's with stock risers unless I get more nerve or a chance to sit on a scoot with 16's to see how they feel. I'm 6'.
I guess it should be mentioned that when you go to Apes it's a very weird feeling at first like you can't control the bike as well. It just takes some getting used to. In reality I can control my bike a lot better with Apes than I can with the stock bars. It's the leverage that the taller bars create making it easier to turn. Slow (1-5mph) turns are the hardest to get used to, but you will.
Oh, thanks for the compliments. She's not done yet though. I have a round oil tank and hoping on a Springer for the frontend and maybe a set of Gimps or some knock offs for bars. All black of course.
I debated a while on the height issue. I decided to go with 9.5" Chubby's on my springer. I don't really consider them apes even if that's what they call them. At 6' it puts my hands just below my shoulder height. I feel I made the right choice with them. They are very comfortable on short hops as well as long hauls and I think they look great too. I have some pics in my gallery if you want to take a look.
