Default another freaking fuel control question

ok, so I'm at my local dealer this morning. I want more sound from my '08 Fat Boy - want it to sound like a Harley. talking to the Tech Manager, I've decided on 1.75" Rush slip-ons. he's trying to talk me into a "download" for $200, or a "Tuner & dyno time" for $660, plus then I need a low restrictive A/C.

he quoted me $299 for the slipons - I know that probably a little more than I'dpay ordering from Rush or another internet store, but then I've got to pay shipping..... so I'm thinking it's just about a wash, plus $82.50 to install them - that's something I want to do.... can't see paying someone to do something so simple.

there's no way I'm gonna pay $180 for the A/C, I can get it for 1/4 that price and put it on myself. (and I understand if I change the fule management system, I'm gonna need the new A/C)

my dilemma - for whatI want, that distinctive sound of a Harley, how far should I go??

OK - let the opinions fly!! I asked for them....

BTW: at this juncture - I have no plans to do anything else to the motor, except run the snot out of it.

Put the mufflers on yourself and skip the a/c kit and download or whatever they're trying to sell you. Your bike will run fine without it.

If it were me, I would probably purchase the slip ons and install them myself.Put a few miles on the bike and go from there.

Nope, if it were me.......wait a minute, it was me,.......

I wanted the sound and I wanted a cooler engine. The purest way to get there was to plunge into Stage 1. (pipes, high flow air cleaner, fuel manager).

The Rush slip-ons are the best from all reporting-in. Do NOT do an ECM download, and certainly don't pay for Dyno time. The slip-ons you can do.

A couple of weeks into ownership of the Rush Slip-ons you will write back in asking about how to get rid of the engine heat. Save one step and get synthetic oil into all three holes (engine, tranny, and primary). This will help a lot.

A couple of additional weeks later you will write in and complain about your wife (or G/F) getting her sneakers melted all over you upper exhaust pipe.

Skip all your current/future problems with an excellent set of V&H Big Shot Staggards, V&H FuelPak, and an Arlen Ness Big Sucker air cleaner/intake setup. After 500 miles on the clock, go ahead and change to synthetic oils. You bike will run cooler than a stock 88-incher, sound bad azz, give you more horsies & torque, and your wife will never ruin a pair of shoes.

You'll have no need to modify your engine any further and you'll have a viable, popular, and proven set up.

I know you are being price/cost conscience, but the predicted issues will come up, and then you are stuck selling slip-ons and spending this money anyway. We all agree that it is ashame that anyone has to go through all of this on a new bike. But the EVIL EPA has the MoCo hog-tied, so to speak, and things are what they are.

There isn't anything coming into the Harley family that is cheap. Wait until the desires for accessories start showing up.

Save the heartache and get yourself to Stage 1 as soon as possible. You'll thank us later.

I just installed V&H Fishtail slip-ons on my 07 Springer classic. It runs just fine, no ECM changes, no new A/C, etc.

Now bear in mind I am intending on these things, so the next purchase will be a controller.... Since I am not interested in anything other than a sweet ride, I am really pulled between the TV II and the Thundermax w/auto tuner. The TV is considerably cheaper, but has it's limitations. The Thundermax is a complete ECM replacement.

Not much opinion here, just letting you know that you are not alone!

LOL... money is always tight.... especially when justifying my toys to the wife!

There is an incredible amount of information to be found here... and everyone is very willing to help and provide the information they have.

The hard part is sorting opinion from fact and filtering what is fact through your individual needs and desires...

Best of luck, and let us know what you decide...

Ride Safe!

Bottom line here is this: If you just change the mufflers, you do not need to do anyfuel map mods. You will only need to change the fuel map if you install the A/C. Even if you kept the stock mufflers and changed the A/C, you would have to do the fuel map. My advise to you is, put on the mufflers of choice and go ride that bike. If you decide on the A/C later on, then consider a Stage I re-map.

Money will dictate your ultimate decision- only do what you can afford. In the long run though, you'll be saving money by going with Poor Boy's advice and getting the full exhaust, fuel management module and high flow air intake. In a year, you'llwant to go stage I and those $299 slip-ons will be thrown in the shed.

I'm with bowtieman....change the mufflers and ride. By the way your stock heatshields will fit over the Rush mufflers....learned that on this forum as well and those annoying melting shoes of your passenger will go away... I was in your spot and changed to Rush. Later with more bucks I changed to a piggyback fuel delivery system and the following month a freeflow air intake. Each change makes it better. Oh yeah, like was suggested....go synthetic.....Redline has some new vtwin 20-60 and new products for tranny and primary.
