How much more would you be willing to spend for an '07 Softail Deluxe vs. an identically equipped '06? Bluebook shows a 1K difference, but looks to be much more spread on the street. So what's it worth to get 6spd and 96"?
If you can, ride each one. I use 6th without lugging at 60 mph two up as long as on not on a grade. Smooth and engine is loafing. Warranty is very important if you experience a major problem. Check various classified sites to see what people are asking for each year (not necessarily getting). Color is important as a personal preference too. If it is only a thousand bucks for a year newer with the six speed, I'd go for it, but it's your money. The '07 may only be $1500 away from an '08 with better financing if you need it and some dealer accessory credit? Good luck in whatever decision you make.
I like having the 6th gear and use it a lot on the interstate. I suppose on a long trip it will save some gas. I am also happy with the 96 CI engine. Does the 06 have fuel injection?
If you are financing the bike and you are not too squeezed for money......
another 1000 bucks spread over a couple years is not allot.
If you can barely make payments.....that is always tough.
But if all is equal......and the newer bike has bigger motor and extra gear.....
I would have to get the newer bike......besides, you would spend the money
in a year or two upgrading the older motor to a 95" anyhow! LOL
Just buy it!
take the money and build one 95 top end that would smoke the 96 that would solve that then just pretend its much cooler to say you only got 5 gears problem solved or thats atleast what i would do. the 96 isnt that impressive you could rather go smoking 95 or for more you could make a smoking stroker 103 or 113
I would not buy one of the new 96" motors. Those things are a ticking time bomb. The MoCo had to modify the tolerances in their service manuals mid 07 year to increase the "with-in limit" crank pinion run-out 400% from the 88's, because so many of them were way out of spec. The oil pumps on these bikes will be an issue. Our local dealer will not install a big bore, cams, or any other mods to the 96's unless the customer is willing to have the cases sent out for bearing upgrades, and the crank sent out for balancing.
