I just did this last week on my 07 nightrain:

After you remove the fender, wheel and brake caliper; you need to drain the fork oil then remove the black rubberdust cover. Once you remove the dust cover, pop out the retaining clip/ring above the seal with a small screw driver. Once you remove the clip, unscrew the 6mm bolts on the bottom and thenpull the slidersdown the tubes until they pop off. You will then have to remove the tubes from the triple trees to get the dust cover and fork seal off.

it's easier to remove the whole fork as an abbembly first, then split the two halves.

Concur. It sounds like a lot more work but it's only a couple bolts. Besides, there aren't too many alternatives to pulling the top caps off when you get to the part where you refill them with oil. To get at those you'll need to pull the tubes out of the trees.

I found it very easy to do while the tubes where on the bike. I didn't want to deal with putting the tubes on a vice to get the sliders off.

you dont need to put them in a vice. after you remove the allen bolt, there will be about 8" of slack between the two halfs. use the top half like a slide hammer. i'd recomend new seals while your in there (cheap). WAY easier to re-assemble the parts back together off the bike. use a mesuring cup to put the EXACT AMOUNT OF FLUID in each. i use a cheap plastic one. put a mark on it with a sharpie marker.

On reassembly, when you are putting the tubes back together and it tells you that you need a special seal install tool...you can use a piece of PVC pipe slid over the tube to get the seals in place. I had the chrome dust caps on the Deuce which I inverted and they did the same thing. The trick is to get the seals in place keeping them level. You know they are in all the way when you can see the channel where the wire clip goes back in.

I went to home depot and bought a 1 1/4" pvc coupling topushthe bearing into place. Also used the old bearing as a buffer to help drive the bearing down the tube into place.
