Default Pinging Noise When Overheated

Hey everybody.

Breaking in a 2007 Heritage Softail.

Just about to take in for the 1000 mile checkup.

Was in heavy, heavy traffic a couple of days ago and was idling alot. Could feel the heat of engine grow. When I would take off in 1st gear, it sounded like the engine was pinging, like there was no oil flowing. Once I got on freeway, it stopped. What is happening?

Thanks

The fuel is detonating in the cylinder before the spark plug fires it. Not good. Basically it's like having the ignition timing advanced too much, causing the fuel to ignite while the piston is still on the compression stroke. So the pressure in the cylinder is pushing the piston down while it's still mechanically trying to come up in the stroke.

Will the 1000k service address this, or will I need to tell them what happened?

I put in octane booster in hot weather, or try some of those AMAZING GAS DROPS!

Good fuel is a must! Good suggestion guys.

We have a max 91 octane here in AZ so I'll mix in a little VP 110 race fuel during the summer to keep from pinging. I also ride dirt bikes so I normally keep a 5 gallon jug of the stuff.

Always buy the highest octane and best quality fuel that you have available to you for the scooter. These have such small tanks and get such great mileage that going cheap isn't going todo enough to justify the savings. Especially when you get issues like this.

Are you buying gas from stations that dispense different fuel grades from a single nozzle?

You would be surprised how much fuel one of those fuel hoses holds beforeit begins giving you your premium-grade fuel choice. In a car gas tank taking 20 gallons at fill-up it may not matter.

But if you are only adding a couple of gallons (maximum 5 gallons), you might be getting a half-gallon or more of somebody else's "regular" before your fuel makes its way out the nozzle.

Whenever I can, I'll even go out of my way, I look for fuel stations that have dedicated fuel-grade nozzles.
