I was sitting beside a Shadow outside my daughter's apt building last year, and kicked it into 1st...clunk...the guy on the Shadow looked at me and said "What was that?"
Hello eagle56, they all clunk a little,it is normal.....It is an 08 so you have plenty of warranty left. Ride it and see if it gets worse, if it does, they will fix it for free under warranty. Have you taken it back to the dealer so the service guys canlook atit?

answer..."That's a f*ckin Harley"...
Funny post.
A buddy of mine put on some Cobra straight pipes on his Honda Shadow last year and asked me to run his bike up and down the street so he could hear the pipes. So I get on the bike, pull the clutch in and slammed the gear shifter into first as I do my Harley. I thought for sure I bent his shifter. Then as I'm flying back and forth going through the gears, half the time I couldn't even tell if I was in gear or not. His Shadow felt like a toy.

Fat boy 08 1600 miles and it crashes into first at the first attempt after this it is still clonky but otherwise o/k.
Im concerned it will break the g/box the dealer tells me this is alright should I take his word for it.
Ive tried running the engine to get warm and rolling the bike forward befor sellecting gear which sometimes eases it a bit surely this is not right I know HD boxes are clonky but should they be this bad at first gear engage.
Sounds normal but heres a test. Can you put it in neutral easily and the light come on saying neutral when you do it? Are you ever in 1st when it says neutral or vise versa? If so then you need your clutch adjusted by someone that knows how to do that. Your dealer may be as stupid as my old dealer that I took my bike to 3 times to adjust the clutch when my bike did that. It clunked too loud and didnt pass the test I stated earlier. Once I carried it to a good dealer they fixed the bike and the clutch have never given me a problem since. If your clutch is not working properly and that clunk comes from you forcing the bike into first thenyou will screw up your gears because you forcing it into gear when it doesnt want to go due to poorly operating clutch. If it passes the above test drive on and enjoy the clunk its normal.
Use a true synthetic product I recommend Amsoil. For most and I must say for me that clunk became not as loud on my 06 heritage after I started using Amsoil. Everyone has their opinion but I believe in their product because of the way my bike performs in all functions more smoothly most of all the changing of gears.
Ya know my 07 Fatboy sort of clunks into first gear, but no way does it sound like its falling apart or going to self destruct - sounds more like solid metal on solid metal.
They all clunk and clutch adjustment is easy for any one who can adjust nuts.
One other thing to think of and can cause problem is the shift rod throw adjustment. When I had my 2000 Heritage Classic the gears shift did not seem quite right for some reason. My dealer in Brisbane (Morgan & wacker http://www.morganandwacker.com.au/which selebrated their 90th aniversary last year) adjusted the shift linkage and was a lot smoother after that.
Just another thing to try and see if it helps. My 07 FXSTC does'nt seem to clank that bad. But then I might be use to it after 16 years.
