We have an 07 Deuce. Hardly qualifies to pontificate about mechanical problems on a 2000 but here goes anyway...
What have you heard? What problems? From who? Specifically, was it someone who owned that year and model or something that simply equates to rhetoric and conjecture?
2000 did mark the first year the the Twin Cam 88B was first installed in the Softail line and there are sometimes growing pains associated with the first year runs with big changes - like an engine. That said, for any given year you will likely encounter a perceived or real set of "problems". For example, some 2007's had gear noise associated with transmissions. Some Softails caught fire because of chafing of the battery cables against the oil tank (ok, that was a real problem). Evo's had a reputation for cases leaking.... the list goes on and on.
The point is no matter what year you choose you will likely hear about problem with this or that. I would not let that dissuade you from purchasing (unless its a proven, known serious problem that can't be mitigated or repaired). But there are very few of those so I would say if you like this bike and the price is right for you, buy it. And of course post pictures.
They changed the cam bearing in mid 2000 and issued a 5 yr. warranty on the early bearings. They used to have a place on their web site to put in your vin# to check and see ifyou had an affected model. I'm not sure if they still do.
I had a 2000 nightrain that was an affected model. I put 20,000mi. on it before I traded, and not one single issue
I have a 2000 deuce. No problems. I just changed out my cam chain tensioners last month with 24,000 miles and found that they were about 1/2 worn. They looked better than I was expecting to find.
I bought the bike used and that was already there so I'm not sure where it came from.... but I was told from the previous owner that it's no longer available, at least not in chrome.
