Getting a full face helmet.
welcome to the world of riding. I've been riding for years and just recently went to a full face. What a difference...the noise level, the bugs, the fatigue from all that wind in your face and I ride when its in the 30's so, it makes a HUGE difference in that dept.. I also got the Scorpion x-700...it's a great helmet that is both DOT and Snell approved for a REALLY great price. I still have my 3/4 helmet and I still wear it occasionally, but for the longer trips, cooler weather riding and safety factor, I find myself almost always with the full face helmet on. Wishing you many years of safe riding...
, and for the thumbs up on the Scorpion. And yes, the price is right--list says $349, but found it for just over $200--guess the 1000 series is bringing the price down on the 700's--lucky me, for it sounds like there is little dif between the two. Ride safely as well. Take care, A.
Back to the helmets. I ride with a Shoei RF-1000. I've had them all and to me, this one is the most comfortable. I say buy the best one you can afford. I've made accident scenes where cheap helmets broke apart way too much. I made a scene once were the face shield shattered, a piece cut through hisface then roadthe cheek bonestopping at his ear.The kicker wasit wasn't that badof an accident. Anyway, best of luck and congrats againon the baby.
Over here, we have to legally wear approved helmets, so it is never a question of a helmet or not, but a question of which one. I have tried loads of them over the years, open face, flip front and full face, most makes as well. For me I wear an Arai full face most of the time. Its comfy and cool enough not to boil on hot days. I also have a Arai open face and a Shoei flip.I feel very exposed now with the open face as I have worn the full face for such a long time, so hardley wear it now. The flip is good but make sure you get one witha strong chin guard as some of them are just thing plastic that bend if you puch them lightly! i.e. not much better than a open face.
I also ride with an armoured leather jacket and trousers (pants!). I have two young kids and I have to agree with you, it does make you think more about protecting yourself whilst on your bike. If that makes me uncool then hey, I will be uncoolbut alive! There is only so much you can do to protect yourself on a bike and I like to think that if I was in an accident, I did everything possible to protect nmyself against injury.
I have never ridden without a helmet, but the thought of it makes me shudder as hitting anything over 5mph with your head can't be good!
Hope this helps
I wear a fullface for the same reason just for my grandson. My grandfather was an important person in my life and I want to be in my grandsons life too....
I do wear a helmet every day, and also thinking of getting a full face helmet, I am tired of being hit by debri in the face all the time. A flip up sounds good.
I went down in a corner, wearing full track gear and Shoei Helmet. I broke 5 ribs, my finger and my head slammed into the street. My gloves really protected my hands as they slammed the carbon fiber into the street and dragged along. When my head hit the street right on the side it was no worse than my wife hitting me with a pillow.
A friend suffered life long brain damage riding 10 mph and falling off a bike and hitting his head with no helmet.
Another friend on a Boss Hoss with a little beany helmet got hit coming home by a deer. He was in the hospital for a long time with head injuries. They could have been prevented with a good helmet. They work!
I ride my Harley with my Joe Rocket riding pants, Jacket, AlpineStar Gloves, Suomy Helmet (replaced the Shoei) and don't give a rats *** what people think about my gear. I ride a harley for the ride just like my sportbike and don't need to look like the typical HD guy.
I know my gear will protect me as much as humanly possible if I go down!
Many arguments for and against, half vs. full etc. All depends on what you want and how you feel. True that any helmet isn't going to do much for you ifyou're in a major accident. That's a chance you (we all) take. As for me, I'd much rather be remembered as the guy that was killed on a motorcycle cause I was broadsided by a dumbass talking on a cell than the guy who may have survived the minor accident if I had only beenwearing a helmet.
