I agree that if you are going with the new engine you are going to want to upgrade the pipes and air breather. When I put the new pipes on my deluxe it finally felt like what I thought it should.
As it comes stock it was a bit of a dog, now it feels like I thought it should have.
Depends on how deep your pockets are. I bought a very gently used '04 last spring, with a ton of extras already on it. I certainly have no regrets. However you're paying he bills. If you figure your money is better spent on an '07 or '08, go for it. I'm sure you'll be happy. There is no such thing as a BAD FB in my opinion.
What tlb said....an 05 with a 95 kit will outdo an 07/08 anyday...
I have had one "turn 'em loose" against on of the new 96 inch engine bikes, and smoked his *** with my '01, which is stock except for pipes/Air cleaner mods. Look how much Harleys drop in price, they're not holding their value any more. +1 on the heat problem also, and chances are a used one will have the exhaust/air cleaner already installed.
IMO, used is the way to go unless you are sure you are going to keep it for 5+ years or money just isn't a factor. Let someone else enjoy the first couple years of depreciation. There are lots of low mileage used Harleys out there.
Onyly thing about my bike is that I got it a year ago...then again if everyone knew how bad the economy would get, then we ALL would hae waited. Oh well there is always refinancing.
As an 07 owner Id strongly rec 07 up. The Delphi EFI system is great, a MASSUIVE step up from the older designs. Yeah most want their carbs, but Ill take EFI anyday of the week for my daily ride. Love the setup. Loof for a used set of pipes, get a SC intake kit, and get the SERT. The precanned maps are about all you need. Got my VH Big shots, SE intake and SERT for about 800 bucks. Installed myself and no issues.
Sure used is cheaper, but we have yet to see the full potential of that 96 in Twinkie! Bigger cams, bump the compression, add a bore kit and I'll put money on the 96 TC.
I was tossed between the '06 and '07 when I bought mine.
In my opintion the 88 is a better motor. Many will disagree with me but I know I made the right choice and saved a lot of cash in the process. I might consider an '08 one day if I bought another but I would never under any circumstances buy an '07 Harley. No offence to '07 owners. Just my opinion and doesn't count for much.
I love my 08. The 200 rear tire, 6 speed, an 96" motor is great. I installed pipes, breather, and sert myself with no problems. Download a map with the push of a button vs. pulling a carb off to rejet. You will probably be happy with whatever year you choose though. As far as big bore kits go, if your the type to do that, you would probably do that with the 88 or 96 but with the 96 you can go up to 107 without boring the cases.
