Purchased my Softail Custom 08 about 2 months ago and paid state taxes.... and now the state of Virginia is here to collect another $380 for my yearly personal property tax... Gotta love it... Now all I need a state rebate check to match my federal rebate check... Sorry was opening my mail while on this forum and needed to vent... There goes my new headlights... :-(
I heard that if you don't come up with a figure for your personal property tax to be based on, Virginia will assign you a figure with the Tax bill attatched.
Is there a State Income Tax as well?
How about County and or City/Town Income Tax?
Sales Tax too I guess?
I don't like being Taxed, but jail isn't very high on my list either! lol
Didn't the pilgrams leave the motherland because of two main reasons? It's been a very long time since school was over for me, but it seems that it was Church and Taxes. Back to the Motherland?
We have to pay both sales tax and property tax here in SC. On the bright side , the sales tax is capped at $300 and, they redefined the definition of "motor vehicle" to include motorcycles in 2006. The means that my property tax bill dropped from $475 in 2006...to $225 in 2007.

You don't get to come up with the figure to be assessed on. The government does it for you based on book value.
Yes, Va. has a state income tax.
No, they do not have a local income tax.
Yes, we have a state sales tax. In addtion localities can have their own sales tax, usually on things like prepared food and cigarettes.
You do not go to jail for not paying your taxes. They just take your money and stuff away from you for not paying.
In my part of the state, you wouldn't pay taxes on the vehicle until next year.
Yes, Virginia did change the law a couple of years ago to pro-rate the personal property tax so that if you bought a vehicle any time during the year, you owe a prorated PP tax on it. I guess they couldn't stand the thoughts of some vehicles not being taxed for nearly a year. Prior to the law change, some people would wait to buy new vehicles till after January 1 to avoid the PP tax for a year. I hate the PP tax. Now there is some PP tax relief but I don't think it is going to last. It is being eroded away as the state provides less relief each year. It is a significant expense with the cost of new vehicles.
