Default Rear tire size
Anybody know the widest tire that can be mounted on a stock rear wheel of a 1997 softail fatboy?

A 140/90/16 should fit fine. A 150 may rub your rear fender.

I am running a 150 rear tire w/ about 1/16" clearance with belt. I do have a custom rear fender, though. Also, it is a 1999 model, but to my knowledge nothing changed between those years that would influence this application. Anything larger than 150 width will need a lot of mods.

I have a Metzler chart that tells you what fits and what mods are needed that i can email you if you pm me with your email.
