The previous owner of my Night Train (EFI) changed the pipes (several times) and installed the S.E K&N air filter. He even drilled holes into the undersite & back of the air filter cover to let it breathe a little easier. I would consider him a gear head. He did all of the major work on this bike and the others he has owned in addition to being an aircraft mechanic. Everything from cams to headwork and boring.
Well, he's since moved out of state and I can't locate him to answer a few questions. When I bought the bike, he didn't mention an ECM flash for the new intake & exhaust. But I can't imagine with all of his wrenching knowledge that he wouldn't have updated the ECM.
To get to the point, how do I determine if the ECM has been updated or not? Is this something HD is going to charge big $$ to tell me? Is there some way to do it yourself?
Since putting on Vance & Hines Big Shots with the Power Commander, all the maps tried have been stock ECM. I'm not at all happy with the way the bike is operating, poor gas mileage and lots of popping on deceleration. Now I'm wondering if I've been using the wrong maps after all.
I've downloaded a few new ECM Stage 1 maps and will give them a shot.
What exactly does a Stage 1 ECM upgrade to by the way AND will this seriously affect performance when not using the correct PC maps?

The dealer would have to hookup to it with the scanalizer or ditial tech and could tell you what map is in there. The PC over rides (piggybacks) the maps in any event but I see where you're going here by not knowing what you are starting off with.
The stage 1 download raises your RPM limit from 5800-6200 and I'm sure there are other parameters that is changes like fuel mapping and maybe ignition also otherwise it would not be beneficial when you change the intake and exhaust . It's a closely guarded secret to try to find out what is in these downloads. I have tried a few times with no results at all.
it is my understanding that the harley download makes changes to air/fuel mixture to allow for the SE air filter to be used and does not change timming or anything else other then rev limit from 5500 to 6200, maybe someone else can comfirm this. also i heard that all maps out ther for 06's are for stock ECM. not sure this is true, just what i have heard.
