Primary change
Nothing exciting here. I just changed my primary oil for the first time. Been puttin it off. The way you are supposed to set the proper level pretty much sucks. Its hard to see and very subjective. Needs a frickin dipstick!! The job itself went much easier than I thought it would be.

I know what deadman77 is saying, I thought the instructions on how to tell when you have reached the proper level is crap. The drawing is not very helpfull. Either way I drained it good and added a quart and left it. It has worked for me.
I'm glad you brought it up. I changedall three holes on my 04 fatboy, changing the oil is not a problem, it's trying to see in there. I also added a quart, but then others say it is only suppose to be 26 ounces. I know I need to get a service manual, put would it have killed harley to put the capacity in the owners manual. Shouldn't all softails 2000 thru at least 2006 be the same?

I was reading somewhere that too much oil can cause difficulty finding neutral.

Mike, the proper way on the primary is have the bike vertical and not on the kickstand. Use a flashlight so you can see down into the primary. Fill until the oil just kisses that bottom of the clutch diagraphm...looks like a shiny brake rotor. That is the proper level. Usually takes approx 26 - 32 ozs to get there. I always add the oil thru the derby cover opening, because if you do it from the primary chain inspection cover it takes too long to drain down into the big cavity.
