i own an 08' night train. my 1000 mile service is due. i want to do it myself but i heard it will void my warranty. does anyone know about this? and if everything that they do at the dealer is listed in a service manual. the one that came with my bike says on every damn page to refer to dealer.
Danny is correct, it will not void your warranty. But the 1K service is a very important one and be sure and don't skip any steps. This is also a good time to change the dino oil to Syn3 if you want to go that route. Be sure and get the Service Manual for your bike and it is very complete and detailed on how to do the service correctly. Also I have one of the Fix My Hog Service DVD's which is also an excellant source of info and service tips. This is my 3rd Harley, and I have always performed all my own service, with the exception on the XBones...I let the dealer do the first since I didn't have the details yet on adjusting the springer front end....but I am ready now for the next. Just keep all your receipts and records on the steps you performed for any warranty required.
Just as posted-NO- won't void anything. But Invest in a service manual and make a check list that you did the things to be checked at 1K and keep it with the receipts. I take a pic of the fliter, oil etc. to put woth the paper work also. The supplies sit by the bike on the lift.
Have not gone in for the 500miler check on the springer front, but everything sounds good, noclunking or loose sounds, checked to see that everything looks tight.
Any issues with not changing that oil until the 1,000 mile check up.... ???
Cup of Joe, the reason the Springers have the first service at 500 miles is the Springer adjustments. It is important to have the lower rocker bearing adjusted, which involves removing the front wheel and fender and re-torqueing the bearing and checking it by measuring the amount of torque is required to swing the lower bearing thru a 180 degree arc. It does not require adjustment again until 10K. Also, the factory only lubes the head bearing and does not fill the head tube with grease. At the 500 mile service, it is necessary to re-check the drop-away on the head bearing and adjust if necessary and completely fill the head with grease, which generally will take a whole grease cartridge. I had the dealer do the first one for me, since I did not have the instructions or tools on the Springer adjustments, but now I do so all the rest of the services will be done by me. The total cost was $280 including taxes and took 2.5 hours labor. If you don't want to do the rest, at least have the front end work done at 500...should not require more than 1 hour labor to do.
