Default Primary level

I'm working on a girl friend of mines 93 Sportster, how do you know if the oil level is correct in the primary. I see the drain plug and alittle higher on the primary there is another smaller plug, do you fill to that level? Thanks Glenn.

Once you drain the primary/ trans, open the inspection cover on the primary ( the one above the shifter) and just put in 1 quart (32oz) and your done. There are only 2 holes on a Sportster not 3 like the BT.

Thanks for the reply. I don't want to change it, just check it. I looked in the 2 bolt inspection hole, but want to know the level is correct. Do you have to change it to know its full or not? Do they use the same primary fluid my softail uses, I don't have an owners manual for the bike.

to check the primary level, get the bike sitting up straight and level. Take off the clutch cover (the big round cover), and have some cardboard under the bike, cause you'll problly drip a little oil while taking it off. You should see the oil level just touching the bottom of the clutch diaphram spring. But like JohnK said, if you change the primary oil, simply add 1 quart, and it'll be perfect. As for type of oil, I use mobil 1 v-twin 20w-50 for both engine and primary.
