I don't have any manuals for my bike. I know I need to get them just haven't had time yet. I have a 98 Heritage that my father left me when he passed. It took me awhile before I was ready to ride it.
Myproblem is I replaced the inspection plate gasket but don't know how to check the fluid level in the primary. I am used to the way they set the V-rods up where there was only one oil level to worry about. Does the primary share the tranny oil or is it seperate? If seperate how do you check it? I haven't spent much time trying to figure it all out yet just noticed it leaked so I fixed it but now I'm not sure if its low.
I know they are dumb questions but I thought someone would be willing to help. I have never owned a "Real" Harley before...
Best bet would be to pull the drain plug, allow all the oil to drainand once empty re-install the plug and add a quart of good 20-50 oil to the primary....and no the tranny and primary don't share oil.
Put the bike vertical and not on the kickstand. Remove the derby cover. Use a flashlight and look down into the primary. The oil level should just be "kissing" the bottom of the clutch diagraphm (looks like a shiny brake rotor). If it is full enough, wipe off the gasket and derby cover with a clean towel and re-install. Torque the bolts to 84-108 in-lbs in a star pattern. You should be ready to go.
