Default Clutch cable install problem

Hello I attempting to change out my clutch cable and I'm having an issue. This is on a '07 heritage.

The issue I'm having is that I do not have enough length left at the end of the cable to install to the clutch cable to the control. I've got the adjuster fully collapsed just as I did to remove the old cable but with this new cable I do not have enough length to re-assemble. I've taken the cover off and reinspected the work that I've done multiple times and have compared this to the instructions in the manual but a number of times but to no avail. If I have the cover off and place the line into the control that have enought slack to complete the task but I'm thinking that this is not right. I should be able to put the cable on just as I've taken it off.

Any ideas help would be much appreciated...

Perhaps I've got the wrong cable? What I've got is a magnum chromite with 3" of travel....well that's that the part no. says but I don't know how to verify..

Compare the two cables side by side...iftheoldcable is the same length as the one your replacing it with, and the ends of the cable are the same size and shape, you should be good to go... I just changed my clutch cable out for a braidedone yesterday...with the cableadjuster turned completely in I installed the upper clutch lever end of the cable first...then the lower "ball and ramp" end...I did completely disassemble the ball and ramp mechanism in the lower cover to connect the cable to it (it has a snap ring holding themechanism together)...and I did re-use the old gasket on the lower cover (and it's not leaking)...after the install I adjustedthe new cable with 1/8" of "free play"...all is good.

FX-
Why did you install to the lever first? just curious..I can't really measure the cable side by side since the new cable is +10, I'm installing apes and it's been one issue after another...I must be slow..

Thank you for your help..

No particular reason I guess...just decided to start at the top...You forgot to mention you were going with a different length cable for apes...but 10" over should be enough length IMO...but maybe not...your post reminded me of the fun I had installing my Chubby 501's...and the wiringissues...[:@]

I had the same kind of problem when I installed the same cables on my Custom, just in reverse. I was using 4" shorter cables.
Finally found the easy way to do it was with the tranny door off, that way your not fighting with the clutch springs.
Once its all in place you only need to reinstall the door and do the adjustment. I believethey deliberately make them a very slight bit shorter than the originals to allow for new cable settling in stretching after assembly.

Hey thank you very much for the help!! This makes sense..

What type of cables did you use? Were they Magnum Chromites?

Thanks again for your help..

Yes they are. The company is only about 15 miles from my house and I found out that they are one of if not 'the' supplier for Harley's accessories catalog Diamondback cables, lines and charge less for them under their Chromite II name.
Only problem is that they don't make a Chromite IIline for the rear brake on an 07 Custom yet. Or maybe they do but its not cataloged properly.
I had to return the one I got back in January because it didn't fit at all. When I did I was told there was an error in how they made them so it would be a while before they got it straightened out. They are "supposed" to give me a call when they fix the problem but haven't so far. This reminded me of it and it may be time I called them to see if they have forgotten me.
