Default Bullet Headlight housing installation

Hello All,
I am getting this headlight
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...:IT&ih=001

I wonder if anyone has done the installation before ? I am not very good with these things, the Clymer book makes removing the headlight bulb looks easy.

Now, when I remove the housing, will I be able to keep the electric plug as it is ? or will I have to cut the wires and then reconnect them to the new headlight housing when it arrives ?.

Also, The new headlight includes 'wires' so this confuses me a little bit, does this mean I will have to connect the wires myself ? in this case do I need special tools or justa simple electric tape will do the job ?.

Sorry if my questions sound naieve I am still finding my way around the bike.

Regards

A.K.

From the picture it looks like your going to get the headlight without the plug on the end. That means your either going to have to get a new plug and pins, or cut yours off and splice the wires to put your plug on the new headlights lines.
If you need to splice the lines DO NOT USE electrical tape. Get some shrink tubing and liquid tape or nail polish. Just wraping the soldered wires in electrical tape is an open invitaion for trouble later on. And don't forget you have to put the shrink tubing on BEFORE you solder the wires together. You'll find itsreally hard to get it on over the plug.

Check this out for a decenthow too on soldering wires.

Thanks Man,

One more question, would the wires be colored ? i.e. I know which one to solder to which one ? or is there a way to guess it ? I am guessing it is more than just two (should be because of the high beam etc..).

Regards

The headlight circuit on the bike hasfour wires.
Pin 1 O/W orange/white goes to the speedo for the high beem indicator
Pin 2 W white for high or low beam (manual isn't clear on that)
Pin 3 Y yellow for high or low beam (see above)
Pin 4 B black frame ground
The new lightshould come with a wiring diagram and if your lucky uses the same color coding.
If not post up what you get and we'll try to help you out as best we can, from a distance.

If you aren't comfortable soldering, you can use an insulated butt splice and heat shrink tube. That arrangement will work just as well. You can generally shrink the heat shrink tube with your wife's hair dryer.

I'm in the process of building a bike, and just finished the headlight about 1 this morning. Here are my thoughts:

Your headlamp (currently on the bike) should have a plastic sheathing over three wires (one white, one yellow, and one black, I'm pretty sure that the orange/white isn't actually used on domestic models). Unplug the plug from the main harness to cut the wire off, and then plug it back in to figure out the two tasks below (you don't have to have it routed correctly for the things below).

Working from the end of the wire bythe headlamp, pull the sheathing back, without cutting it. Try and get at least a couple of inches so that you can sell the lamp, or re-use it when you want to. I like having the plastic sheathing, but you can buy others (like at Fry's) that look a little better.

From what it looks like in the Auction, the new hadlamp only has two wires (of random colors, mine were red and yellow, it doesn't really matter). That means that the third wire that you cut (the black one) is not used in this case, and the lamp just grounds to the frame (you can cut the black wire off the plug shorter, so it never comes out, or what I'd do is just shrink wrap the end, so that you don't have any mystery grounding possible. Plug the plug back into the harness, but don't pass it between the tanks and such.

There are two tasks:
1) Figure out which wire on your light is high beam, and which is low.
2) Figure out which wire it hot fromthe plugwhen the high beam switch is on and which wire is hot when it's off.

Then solder the high beam wire from the light to the wire that's hot when the switch is on, and the low beam wire from the lamp to the wire that's hot when the switch is off. Shrink wrap each of those separately, and then pull the plastic back up over the joints (hint: if you stagger the cuts in the wires off the bike, you won't end up with a big lump in the sheathing), attach the light, and you're done.

If you're good with soldering and wiring in general, I'd say it could be done in about an hour. It took me about 2, mostly because I made the wires too short to reach back to the plug (the wires on the new headlight were shorter than I thought), so I had a few beers and started over, but had forgotten which wire was which.

The insulated butt splice is a much easier option, but sometimes the sheathing won't fit over everything, so you have to me a little more careful about staggering your cuts.

Let us know how it goes. If I remember this evening, I'll post what wire on the harness is high, and which is low. (But I think white is high beam.)

Ahhhhhh guys,
Your help is great but I am in deeper dodo...
The stupid mounting is way in the front of the headlight as you can see form the picture (first post)
http://i20.ebayimg.com/05/i/000/a2/65/95c3_1.JPG
This means it does hit the Steering stem and when I tried to figure it out ( removed the original headlight to mock install it) and it is too high in the back it actually hits the top triple calmp.

So now, I need .. either
1 - A bracket to forward the mounting point 6 "
OR
2 - A bracket to forward the mounting point 5" and lower 1" (I prefer this actually).

On Ebay there is one kit but there is no mention of how long it does extend the point and does not look like 6" to me .

Ebay Kit

I searched JP Cycle, but to no Avail ? any idea where can I find such kit ? another solution I think of, is to actually take this extended kit and instead of installing on the top of the lower triple, install it on the bottom ?! this will give me an inch down and then I need only 5" forward.

As for soldering, I got my soldering kit upstairs, got an old wire and I am going to practice on it for now until I get this soldering thing right.

Ahhh.. the fun of playing with the bike

Regards

If you didnt do it allready DONT BUY IT !!!! Thats the one on my bike and it didnt fit so I had to Make it fit by taking the whole thing apart and moving the mount , drilling new holes and the so called show quality wrinkle finish is crap ! There is a run in the finish in plain sight on top of the light and they had an attitude when I emailed them to ask if I could return it ! Saying that everyone is inspected before it leaves BULLSHIT ! So I got stuck with it and will have to pay to have it repowder coated in the winter [:@]Do your self a favor and cancel the order if you did order it allready and save yourself the aggravation

OOPPs too late you allready got suckered []
