Default sportster vs. dyna vs. softail

recently sold my sportster, good bike for what it was, but on the puny side. have decent amount of seat time on a 05 dyna lowrider. also a good bike and wouldn't mind getting one. also like the nightrain.

i guess i'm really looking for the differences between the dyna and the softail. straighline performance should be similar. how about in thetwisties? ride quality?comfort on longer cruises (nothing major).

all info about the softtail would be appreciated.reallywant a rigid for the looks, but my back is too bangedup for it.

tks.

I went with the Dyna after I sold my Sporty. Now going to a Road King because I want to do more touring. Going to be hard to say good-bye to the Low Rider (still have some of the footpegs left).

You really need to get onto several Softails to feel the difference. You have experience with a Dyna, thats good. The Heritage and Fatboy Softails have a heavier suspension, wider tires, floorboards, and depending upon the model, a windshield and bags. Nice solid bikes, smooth and comfortable. Then there is the Custom, Nightsterand other Softails, more sporty. Likely a Dyna is better for the twisties, and a Softail for comfort and cruising.

jurob,

If your back is messed up your best bet would be a softail or a touring model.

YOU can get a Mustang seat with driver backrest if you have back problems.

If you aren't sure about which bike you like better, go down to the stealership. I'm not sure about where you are at but here you can pay one price, not sure what it is but i know its less than $100 and ride several different bikes in a day. That way you have your own opinion on what you think is best for the way you ride.

I bought a new 08 sportster and I felt like you, too puny. Although I am a big guy and they are made for smaller people in my opinion. I traded it in on a new 08 Night Train. Best extra money I have ever spent, ride quality, bike quality, everything is improved. You won't be sorry. The train is like riding in a car compared to the sporty.

If you are going to do two up riding I would stay away form a Dyna. The new Dynas have the rear foot pegs mountd to the swing arm. So every bump you hit is transmitted to your passenger's feet. Had I noticed that prior to buy my Wide Glide I would have bought a Softail Custom. Other then that I love my Wide Glide.

My neighbor has a Lowrider, and when you put both the Lowrider and the Fatboy side by side, much less, ride the two one after the other, I am so glad I went with the Fatboy. Smoother ride, more capacity, and just bigger, more comfortable.

You will also find the that with the larger softails, you have more options on how you want to ride. You can dress it up or dress it down.

With back problems, you will definately want to look at the Road King.

Spend time in a dealership hopping on different models. Test drive any that you can. That's the only way to know for certain. A touring bike can be just as hard on you as a Softail or Dyna. Eveyone is a little different.

We can all pontificate here on what is best for you but without a full medical history and personality profile we are really just throwing jello against the wall and waiting to see what sticks.

Try out bikes at the dealer...You'll know the right one when you sit on it. That magical feeling will be there.
