Otterbob - I don't think it will rust any more than any other chrome on the bike - I suppose that I am in the right place to find out here in the land of the umbrella and wellington boot
I have a laser engraver and have done similar work, I am looking for a AC Cover made of black anodized aluminum...when you etch it, it removes the black and looks great!
The marking is on the surface, it is not a deep cut. As I understand it some kind of black paste is burnt into the surface by the laser. I imagine that if the chrome is rubbed off the marking will not show under the chrome, but it seems pretty durable - only time will tell. I have only washed and applied a layer of wax polish so far, so it will be interesting to see how it stands up to everyday use.
I run a engraving shop for a living mostly plaques and stuff for the military... The laser is just that a laser that etches things like enamels off of metal, wood or glass, when they do stuff on plain metal like the chome they use a laminate of which ever color that the laser burns through and applies it to the metal. Those are some nice peices you got done!
