i use the heel shifter all the time and find it easier just kick it down when down shifting steping on it down again but in the front seems pretty easy to me. I tried the toe shifting but its not for me
I removed the heel shift, added a slightly large toe peg/padand capped where the heal shift wentwith a chrome cap. Neat and I didnt have to re-learn how to change gear.
firstly regarding finding neutral - you should find it easier as the bike wears in. I found mine very stiff and hard to "find" first 1-2000.As Ionly use the heel for finding neutral now considering taking off ... too many stories of catching your pants when dismounting.
i just got my deluxe a few weeks ago..i'm totally a newbie..still waiting to take the msf course, still learning about my bike..but i did have dh remove the heel shifter as right now it's enough for me learning to use the toe shifter. and i keep putting my heel on the heel shifter from scooting my foot back on the floor board. i may have him put it back on once i'm more comfortable on the bike. he has a heritage and likes the heel shifter.
also i have a heck of a time getting my bike in neutral!! glad to hear it will eventually get better.
I removed mine, now it gives me more space for my foot before it always felt like my foot was stuck, also i almost dumped the bike twice when getting off my heel got stuck. also i lifted the toe lever an inch and my boot fits under it better. for netural i take it to first then ease it into neutral just have to get use to that.
I dont like the heel shifter either. I took it off and put the chrome harley cover on the end of the shaft. Problem is it moves the toe shifter closer in toward frame and I have to force my foot inward. What I did was remove the chrome cover and toe shifter then put the heel shifter shaft w/o the "pedal" on it back on but facing forward like the toe shifter then put the toe shifter back on and it moves it out where its suppose to go.
