Default Oil, Oil everywhere!

Went to the dealer last week for oil and filter. The parts guy showed me this orange plastic tray thing that is designed to catch and direct the flow of oil which comes from the filter when its removed - rather than the drip, wipe, drip, wipe routine. I thought I found salvation! Better yet, he said it is specifically made for my '04 soft tail standard! I couldn't get the money out of my wallet and in to his hands fast enough. I rushed home with my pressssscioussss.

After virtually qualifying as a Olympic level contortionist, sweat pouring off me, and swearing to the high heavens for 30 minutes, the orange piece of plastic owned me. It will not fit between the filter and the crank case. But then a thought came to me - let's boil the little orange bast**d in water and soften it some!! Now with scalding hands, I attacked the limp orange piece of plastic with renewed vigor. 10 minutes later same result! No way this side of Pittsburgh is this gonna fit.

Back to the dealer. I find the parts guy that sold me the abomination. And laid before him the now obscenely shape orange thing, horribly misshapen and looking like a large tropical Frito lay chip. I told the guy this doesn't work! He responds "sure it does" and pulls a fresh from the display. He begins the process very similar to what I did on a new FXST. 10 minutes later I offer a paper towel to wipe the sweat from his head and blood from his knuckles - he looks at me with an insane rage in his eyes and says "it doesn't fit"

Has anyone ever gotten this one of these things to work?

I have never tried one of those. But major KUDOS to you for getting the parts guy to admit you were RIGHT! That is a rare occassion for me.

Nope, I use a 3 litre soda bottle with the bottom end cut out. Thattaway, you can take the lid off, and work the filter wrench with a long extension. Works pretty well. I normally put the bike on the lift when I change the fluids but I remove the oil filter before I put the bike on the lift with it leaning on the side stand.

Similar to OG, I use a 20 oz. soda bottle with the bottom cut out and cut in half vertically. Works perfect.

Cess,
I know that this isn't supposed to be funny, but you really made me chuckle, man. You tell a sad story in a way that made me smile. I'm sorry, but it was told so well. Thanks.

I think you was sopposed to take the crank case position sensor out first.

I will use a 2 liter bottle.

Thanks for the support. I am certain there is a twelve step program somewhere that can treat the anxiety derived from an attack of the HD version of a Rubik's Cube. Anyhoot, I really like the soda bottle idea - gonna try that next. As far as removing the CPS, the orange plastic son-of-bitch actually has a cut out (or did have before I melted it in the boiling water) that went around the sensor.

Some days you get the bear and some days the bear gets you!

Yeah, it's dirty, and the pic was of the clutch pedal and home-made extended footboard, but if you look you can see the vertical oil filter. Got the mount from NAPA (it's made by Wix) and mounted it to the frame. No more mess, and it's easy to fill it when putting the new one on.

I originally bought the same thing when I just had the FB, it never would fit so it got barried some where in the garage. When I got the bagger I dug it out and it fit's nicely the only thing is you have to pick up the filter in order to keep from backflowing and going over the back side. This is where you get another PIA the filter get's covered in oil and slippery, equaling dropping it and splashing oil everywhere. I am not sure wich one is messier to tell the truth. Who in there right mind designed this anyhow?
