260 with a cooler? I think I would check to see if oil is flowing through that sucker. Maybe your thermostat isn't working. With the bike moving in the wind and a 185 degree thermostat the oil temp shouldn't be 260.
I just did the switch to Mobil 1 V-Twin and also didn't see much temp change but I do like having the peace of mind knowing that this stuff is rated at better then 300 degrees....
 \\;
Well, I put an oil cooler on, and the temp was the same as DH's when we stopped after a ride, and he has no oil cooler...whats up with THAT???[:@]
 \\;
Oil cooler seems an obvious cure for high heat on the 96B. \\; But after doing some online research including the tech section here, \\; \\; seems there's no clear concensus on their effectiveness or value.  \\; In \\;fact the argument seems to lean toward them \\;being a waste of money for most riders. \\;
 \\;
So I'm \\;holding off \\;till \\;a more definitive answer comes along. \\; \\;But your example certainly doesn't \\;give me much hope that and oil cooler is the answer. \\; \\;

I agree, I just got a new temp gage for the oil also. \\; I'm going to do some testing this weekend, see what's up. \\; I hope this wasen't a waste, I did get it for being stuck in traffic.
 \\;
The ride I checked it on was like a 50 mile to the restaurant, then checked it, no traffic, straight shot. \\;

If you are overheating on a 50 mile ride with no traffic, you have other problems. Oil cooler in traffic isnt going help you much since \\;it needs air moving thru the cooler for it to be effective. I have a cooler and overheated two years in a row riding down main street \\;in Sturgis. Now I have fans on my cooler and have no problems  \\;in heavy traffic.

 \\; \\; \\; Changed to the HD premium cooler and the HD synoil and it ran the same temp 235, \\;as the dino oil by itself. Went back to the dino oil and the temp went down to 225.
Did motor work, 95" and 10.25-1 comp,SERT and the temp \\;very rarely goes above 225 on the big road @80mph and above for long stretches. Get off that high speed cruising and the temps go back down to 196-205. These temps are all taken with digital therm. It's all in the tune with you're fuel mgmt system. I've seen similar results on 96" motors.Synthetics might be good in the long run but I've had a couple of bikes over the years that have had 80 to 90 thousand miles with no bottom end work. I'm not sold on the added expense of the synthetic oils and the cost. \\;
