THis is probably a dumb question. But what is the stage 1 upgrade. Still waiting to have my V/h exhaust put on along with new bars and cables, \\;and all this reading i'm doing is confusing me even more. Just wondering when the dealer does the new A/c and race tuner is that considered the stage 1?? I'm Getting so aggrevated with them now they are waiting on my braided cables....(another week) Sheesh! wish I could just go somewhere tomorrow to get it all done. Is it possible there are other shops ( non harley) that would have these things in stock and maybe charge a little less? Only reason I'm going with dealer in the first place is cause they are giving 15% off parts. They already screwed up the exhaust order. Guess im just getting impatient
Real quick,

Non Harley, as long as they are highly regarded in the community.
Yes, in most cases they are cheaper,
Yes, in most cases at a good indy they will have what you want in stock or can order it quicker
Stage 1. A/C, pipes, tuner like the sert or PCIII, ecm download. Larger engine size like going from 96 to 103 or 110. Stage 2. cams, head work and such. Stage 3 and 4 include more engine work like the crank and adding air induction, blowers, turbos and such.
Hey man........I know what you mean about being confusing........with my new Heritage though I think that the Stage \\;1 is going to be needed because the heat coming off the right side of the bike is unbelievable. \\; My question \\;to the softail group here is how hard is it to install a Stage 1 and if taken to a dealer, how many hours of labor should it take. \\; Any help is appreciated!!!!

You might want to go to nightrider.com and order a set of IEDs for you bike. They will adjust the lean condition out of your ride and make it much cooler and more fun to ride. They are about the best $70 you will spend on the bike. Very easy to install.

As Paris H. would say, \\; Harley's are HOT. \\; You can fool around with them a little or alot, spend mucho dollars, \\;and maybe make them a bit cooler. \\; \\; Still going to be \\; HOT.
 \\;
Do your research and go slow. \\; \\; I'm going to give the nightrider product a shot at $70. \\; Right now I'm not looking for hp gains, just want my stock bike to run a little richer and hopefully cooler. \\;
