While I was riding around today my rear brake just dropped out. I almost lmost ran through a toll booth due to limited stopping power. I took it to my local dealer and they said it might be the master cylinder, but they won't be able to look at it until Tuesday. The bike is an 04 FXST with about 3,800 miles on it. I purchased it from the same dealer about 2 months ago and I've put about 800 miles on it since.
Anyway, I was curious is this is a common thing to happen. How much should I expect the repairs to cost? Anyone think I should hold the dealership responsible for the repairs?
Bummer. Dont know about your state but in CA dealers are responsible for brakes. Dont know the time limit on their responsibility but its something I would look into. They may need to do all brake repairs under warranty even as a used bike. Try to check your local laws before going back in on Tuesday, maybe check with an indy who sells bikes.
Dealers allegedly check fluid levels and safety check bikes they sell. \\; With two months and 800 miles they should not give you a hard time. \\; If so, ask to talk to the manager. \\; The manager will be more inclined to keep a customer. \\; If not, take it elsewhere. \\; Purchase a manual...it's a good investment.
Connecticut does not have the same type of binding arbitration process to protect consumers purchasing used vehicles. However, the state does require dealers selling used vehicles to provide a warranty under certain conditions:
If the vehicle is less than seven years old, and costs more than $3,000, it must be protected by a warranty.
If the vehicle costs more than $5,000, the warranty is good for at least 3,000 miles or 60 days, whichever comes first.
During the warranty period, the dealer is obligated to cover any repairs needed to make the vehicle safe and operationally sound.
Technically I have had the bike for 74 days as of me dropping it off yesterday. Hopefully the fact that it is close to the required warranty time and the fact that is endangered my life, they'll take care of it. Will keep you guys informed.
Does anyone know if this is something they could have spotted while inspecting the bike and caught before it happened?
over 40 thou. on my 04 std. and never had any brake problem except wearing them out .
\\;you should not have had reduced stopping power unless you only use rear brake
might want to start using the front a whole lot more also helps pad wear on the rear.. front pads last a lot longer than rear -don't know why they are the same pad....
