When I bought my 2008 Heritage in May, the dealer told me that i shouldn't be shifting into 6th gear until 65 or 70.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; I actually feel like I could do so at 50-55.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; The manual says 55.&nbsp\\;\\\\\\; was interested in your experiences re this.

thanks in advance,
Consider 60 as the minumum, and that's on level ground. Anything below this you will actually use more fuel than in fifth according to my custom when I had throttle grip marked for positions. At 60 it's still on the borderline of lugging and the engine is gutless, but it will work. Takes a while to realize these engines like to rev more than previous models. Sweet spot seems to be at 3000 rpm. My personal view on the manual shift points are full of ****, and more epa orientated.

If your bike is "stock" I mean no a/c change no
exhaust change and no ecm remap or mod, then
55 is probably too low unless you are on flat ground
&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;and are not attemptig a pass. As you make changes
to your induction and or exhaust plus ecm, you will find
&nbsp\\;\\\\\\;that you can in fact use 6th @ a lower speed.
+1 103in bagger with IDS....6th at 45 1500 rpm but thats the limit...any incline and its luggin

mark me down for the 65-70 club at 6th gear. i took the heritage out for a nice long ride on sunday out of town... what a beauty to ride even completely stock (though i admit its time for a stage 1 kit and some decent slip on pipes... and a better seat)

anyhoo...
yea... the heritage seems to like a little rpm rev. i am in 5th once i get into the low/mid 50s

my rule of thumb?

listen to the bike..
20=2nd
30=3rd
40=4th
50=5th
60=6th
but then again this was the same rule i used when i was learning to drive a stick shift car...

If I know I'm going to maintain 65 for a while I'll kick it up to 6th gear. Otherwise, I wait until 70 if I think it'll be a shorter stretch at that speed. Heck, I don't even hit 5th until I'm going around 55. As others have said, it feels like I risk lugging the engine if I shift at lower speeds.
