I know this thread is kinda old guys, but I just stumbled upon it and figured I should add my two cents.

Contrary to what others posted here, you DO NOT remove the axle to install the axle bolt covers. You DO need to remove the axle nut on the left (primary) side of the bike. It uses a 3/4" allen wrench (good luck finding a damned socket without a Snap-On truck near by). Once the nut is removed take the washer off and put it with your other spare parts. Use a rubber mallet to tap the axle far enough to the right side of the bike to get the two piece backing plate in behind the washer on the right side. While holding them in place tap the axle back in to the left to hold the plates in place. Install the left side retainer plate, and then the supplied thrust washer. Replace the axle nut. Tighten to the specified torque (I don't have the instructions near me right now, but I thought it said 98-105 lb/ft). Install the covers onto the backing plates using the six screws provided. Peel the plastic protective film off the bar and shield logo. Admire your work.

Hope this helps someone.

I haven't had time to work on mine yet but this update is a huge help. Basically you are just removing the nuts and the axle is just sliding left and right to accomodate the mounts. That sounds easy. Thanks again... where are the pics?
