I lay my cap upsidedown on the seat and as I pull the nozzle out of the tank I give it a couple of shakes(just like taking a pee) and then I use the cap to catch that last drop that always wants to drip on the tank ..

On the ground...I usually pay with debit card and I like to keep the bike upright in order to get the tank as full as possible.

Usually in my hand. That way I don't get distracted and leave it. I don't need two hands to run the pump and fill the tank. I'm right handed so it's in my left hand.
