Default 2002 vs. 2005 Fatboy

I'm looking at buying a Fatboy and have found 2 that I am interested in, one is a 2002 and the other is a 2005. Is there anything different between these 2 bikes either feature wise or mechanically? Both are EFI.

The things I know of. The rear tire is a 150 on the 2005 instead of a 130 on the 2002. The stock mirrors are a different shape. Teardrop style on the 05 & more square on the 02. The 2005 will have 2 trip meterrs to follow fuel distance and ride distance simultaneously. I'm not sure if the 2005 comes with a laydown lic. plate. That is all that I know of. Hope this helps

Laydown plate is extra on the 2005. I never rode a 2002 but I love my '05

2002 was the last year of the timkin bearings in the left side crank case. The timken bearing seem to be the prefered if you plan on doing a performance motor. The 2005 heads make use of what I believe are better components. But in 2005 there are valve seal issues and would require replacement with an updated valve seal.

Here are a couple links covering the 2005 heads.

Thanks for the information. Looking at the 05 I thought the rear tire a little was larger. Can you put a 150 on a 2002? The mirror style is no big deal and the dual trip meter would be nice but as long as there is a gas gauge and an odometer I'm good to go. Also, since I'm not looking to make a performance motor the timkin bearing isn't a factor, as long as the 02 motor is as reliable as the 05 motor. As of right now the 02 is about $3K less [@$13500] than the 05 and seems to be a pretty much equal machine. Any other info that you have would be great. Thanks again.

Yes you can easily fit the 150 tire on the 02. I requires changing the belt and rear pulley and using a pulley adapter, all very easy. The 02 motor is the best year IMO. I am currectly looking for an 02 Dyna, specifically an 02.

I think you will do well with either bike. How many miles on them?
