Default 2005 FXDX Reliability/Issues

I know.. i just bough a bike that i STILL have not picked up and is basically vaporware to you all... but,

i came across a 2005 fxdx and everytime F86's bike pops up on, i want to steal it and ride around like a bat outta hell.

the 2005 has 60k miles and is beat up pretty bad. looks like it was dropped pretty hard. the seller has it as 3800 obo.. with to me says 3000.

aside from the the cam chains.. what else to watch out for on this guy?

..... if i buy it... it is a toy/project.... not one i'll put on a pedestal.

The overall answer is "No." My history with the bike is as follows:

I've been involved with Harleys for several decades, and at one time worked part time in a custom shop. Over the last decade I started spending more time on sportbikes (I guess I did things in the opposite order of many), and since my now ex-wife had her own bikes, I never had to worry about carrying a passenger. Two years ago my girlfriend wanted to start riding with me, so I went in search of another Harley for two-up riding. Being a performance nut, FXDX seemed perfect. I found mine in the local Craig's List, and later discovered that it was sadly being sold by a recent widow, and her deceased husband had purchased the bike new. It was 100% original, with the exception of some very nicely done engine work. A very respected (but now defunct) shop built the engine, Simon's Performance. Andy Simon is well known in dragbike circles. I have a lot of the receipts, although some of them lack the level of detail that I would like. Here's what I know, with level of detail provided:

95"
Wiseco high-compression pistons
"Stage Two" headwork
SE 211 cams
Mikuni carb "set up"
SE adjustable ignition
Compression release valves

I have dyno sheets from when the bike was about two years old showing about 106 hp and 108 pounds of torque at the wheel, which seems healthy to me for a 95" build.

The only thing I've done engine related (other than maintenance/tuning stuff), is the addition of the Bassani RR3. I've tried to focus more on braking and handling, with a few aesthetic bits here and there... I've added Avon Cobras, radial Tokico calipers, a Super Brace, a Predator mount, a one-off LePera seat, quick detach bags/backrest/windshield, etc.

So, back to your original question: No problems from a reliability standpoint, although I am planning on installing the SE cam tensioner/oil pump kit. My primary problem is one of vibration... I keep chasing it, and I've pretty much ruled out chassis issues at this point. The engine just plain vibrates a lot. The Predator definitely helped with handling, but not with vibration. I've just ordered a Custom Cycle Engineering rubber/metal top mount, so we'll see if that helps...

But yes, I LOVE the bike!

My other bike has definitely felt neglected these last two years...

Do we need to take up a collection for a bus ticket so you can get to work on the Lazarus?

Oh... I had it wrong. I'm pretty sure I got my first Harley because I thought it would give me more access to hookers, booze and drugs...
