I have an 08 NT and am installing a bobtail rack. The kit comes with a large washer/threaded insert for the fender. Any reason I can't use the insert that is already there? It is smaller in diameter but it has a retaining clip the new kit does not. Changing a seat would me more cumbersome with the new set up. The instructions are not very clear.
Toss the insert, use the large washer. They ship the insert incase you don't have factory hole in your fender already. Here is a pic of the rack on my 05

I think you may have made a slight error, the hardware supplied is for bikes, like my Custom, that use a different seat mounting setup. The NT's or Standards have a bolt installed in the fender hole at the factory to hold the seat on. Where the Custom seat mounts using two bolts to the sissybar.
They all have the 'keyed' hole because the fender is a common part stamping, but the factory puts a plastic plug in the Custom instead of the nut, bolt and washer to fill the hole.
So the extra hardware isn't required, unless you want to use the longer bolts, for any bike that already has the seat mounted in the fender hole. The larger insert may also be included to disribute the loading from the rack to a slightly larger area. Personally I would leave the one you have in there alone and just use a larger washer on top with some kind of softer padding under it to keep it from buggering up the paint surface.
BTW That's a really nice looking paint job, is that one of the Factory radical paint sets?

Thanks I kind of like the paint job myself. It was painted by a friend of mine. I bought a complete set of tins as I wanted to keep the O.E. ones. I was going to do the California Kid paint job on them but havent layed out flames in a long time so I asked him if he would lay them out for me. He had all 3 peices laied out and ready for paint then I got a Harley Parts flyer in the mail with this paint job on one of their bikes. I brought it in the next day and told him we needed to change themes to the devil tail reverse flames and after seeing the pictures he said your right and pulled all the tape off and layed out the new design. I had to force him to take $400 as he did'nt want anything for doing the paint job. The tins are awsome in the sun.
Really looks nice, the negative/black tails in the rear fender and gold pin striped seperation along the borders of the red (metal flake?) are an extra nice touch. Makes a good paint job really stand out.
Must have put a ton of clear over it to get it that flat looking, and for that price you about stole it.
It was cleared and sanded after each color was added and inbetween the 5 layers of clear and yes its as flat as can be. Oh by the way its actually orange, the camera made it look a little red. Final color is Testors turn signal orange airbrushed over gold base.
I didn't look at the link in your sig till after I typed that. The pic in there shows the color better, a very nice choice to go over black. Wish I had thought of it first and had a good friend with the talent to do a superb job.
