After being do &!$$ed because of the loud 5th gear noise in my 2007 Heritage (5,000 miles on it) I took the advice of the members here and changed my Tranny fluid to Redline (which is really red and filled with microparticles). After letting the transmission drain all night I noticed it had a dark brown color and had the same kind of smell that darkened engine oil has. Maybe it is my ignorance but should it turn that dark? My engine heats to about 225 on the road, exactly where it should be and it should not burn at that low of temperature. Is this normal or is there something I should be watching out for?

Mine will darken some after 5,000 miles but it always smells like gear oil, nastier smell than an engine oil. What kind, brand of oil was in your tranny?
The Stealer replaced my trans oil (07 Dyna 6 speed cruise drive) at 1K miles with HD Syn3. I drained it out last week with 4.5K on the odometer. The Syn3 was dark like thick coffee (cuban), no lattie please. The last bit looked contaminated, foamy cream color. The drain pan looked a little like a "B52" or Kalua and Irish Cream. The drain plug had a fuzzy head like a fuzzy naval. This is all getting me hung over.
BUGGER hit it right on the nose...mine was exactly the same way and had a touch of the navel-fuzz also. Kalua or thick coffee would be a great description..poured it on the poison ivy and it did it in. I replaced it with Red Line 75/145 heavy duty and it took care of that 5th gear noise. The whole bike sounded more quiet other than the pipes. FXDSE2
