One more thing...in the Softail manual, the info about all of the different plugs on the bike is after the tool section in the back. Didn't really understand why it was not included in the electrical section, but eventually found it anyway. Shad

Once you get the hang of it, all wires can be removed in matter of seconds. I just installed 14" apes and did not want but one solder splice on each side. Ended up being a very clean way to install. I went down to my local Harley dealership and was fortunate enough to get to talk to a technician in person about it.

You're description above is exactly what the technician told me. It is called a Molex connector and yes there is a primary and a secondary lock.

In the center of the connector there are two holes that have to be pulled up about 1/8" before you can push each of the individual wires out via the other lock. The first lock is the one that's giving me all the troubles ( two holes next to each other in the center of the connector). I can't get this one to pop up. Any hints as to how to get it to pop out?

Thanks,
Mike

Man I wish i would have taken pictures when i did mine....
I can invision in my head how its done... but putting it into words is another thing...

i used a small needle nose pliers to unlock the first one... it slid into the two holes and I just yanked on it gently ...

Default Handlebar wiring

Mike, I used a cotter key puller that has two slight bends at the end. The one with the 180 deg end would be perfect but the radius on the bend is too large to get engage the hole in the plug. Put it in one of the holes as far as it will go and twist slightly to wedge the end of the pick and then pull straight up. Don't be afraid to pull pretty hard and you'll find that it comes right up. You wont tear anything up and if you do, I spent $8.00 on a new plug. Remember too when you put the paper clip, or whatever you use into the hole below the pin, you will feel it bottom out. After the bottom, you have one more "click", then pull the wire free. Shad

Thanks guys!!!

The needle nose pliers did the trick. The guy at the Harley dealershiip showed me a pick that had a hook on the end of it that he used so I went and bought one but I couldn't get that thing to work at all! LOL. Needle nose pliers and it came up no problem at all (then I felt like an idiot!).

Once I got the first lock popped out the second lock wasn't a big deal either.

Again thanks for everyone's help.
