DALTON,
The stage 1 download makes sense in respect to the 1 size fits all. So you recommend an aftermarket tuning system? I've been reading and not sure which one to go with. I've heard a lot of good things about the PCIII. I have the FuelPak on my wifes bike, but I know once you go cam's and headwork, you can't use it.
My concern is with the warranty, and my local shop assured me that if they do the 103, then they will honor the warranty, so I have to keep that in consideration. At this point, I'm still weighing all of my options to get more power.
I'm pretty sure there are some guys on here running big builds with the PCIII. It is pretty versatile. While I have decided that the next thing I am doing is an engine build as well (even if it takes a year to get the $$$), I have a PCIII and plan on using it. I am looking into HQ, GMR Performance builds, andrews etc. I just want a RELIABLE 95" build that will give me some 90/90 type numbers, focusing more on low/mid range riding. I am leaning towards the Screamin Eagle 95" kit with a hotter cam like andrews.
But, to answer your question, my mileage has sucked lately too, I think the guy who tuned my PCIII just richened me up a bit too much. However, I haven't gotten out and riden a full tank through to get a good accurate reading.
Checked my mileage for the first time yesterday.
Combination of highway and city driving (almost exactly half and half) with detachable fairing on. One up (200 lbs).
Probably averaging around 40 mph in the city and 65-75 mph on the highway.
150 miles and used 3 1/2 gallons. Approx 43 mpg and I am quite happy.
I have a 07 Fatboy with just over 2,100 miles on it and bone stock.
And I do tend to get on the gas frequently.
My 08 Night Train gets 44 with a mix of town and highway, and on my trip from Florida to Sturgis and back I got as high as 52 on the long runs on open road at 70-75 mph. I am running Short Shots, SE/AC, XIED's. My good friend is a mech at the HD dealer and says that the stage 1 download only changes timing curve and raises rev limiter. HD is not allowed to change fuel curve beyond EPA mandates. Also, since I installed the XIED's they really lowered the temp of my motor, no more fried thighs.
My 07 fxstc only gets 37 mpg with just me on it..bike is still bone stock with 1900 miles on it..the milage improved from 31-32mpg before the 1000 mile service, then it jumped up to 37 solo..dealer didn't tell me if they did anything else besides 1k service but the bike was in the shop for almost 4 hours,I watched and waited, any way I'm not complaining..

In good hands, the PCIII is a good choice for a stock to mildly built bike, and yes there are even some running them with decent results on some pretty large bore engines. I really recommend SERT or the DTT TCFI III for very large bore (113 and bigger) or smaller bores with high compression and cams larger than 550 lift or durations that are quite oong.
I recommend really questioning your dealer on the warranty on the Stage II 103. Lots of dealers building them but usually the warranty is only good at that particular dealer, so if you go anywhere on a trip, you are out of luck if something goes wrong.
ya mean we're suppose to check the gas consumption?? I thought just tree huggers do that. I just put gas in and turn it into noise - do this about every 130 - 150 miles, repeat.
I always keep track of the gas mileage in all my vehicles and I'm not a tree hugger. If there is an unexplained difference in your MPG it is a good indicator that something could be wrong with your vehicle.
I know the download richened up the bike, I guess I never realized it would affect gas mileage that much. I'm curious to know, I'm thinking about Harleys 103 stage two kit, this winter. Will the mileage suffer much from that?
I know you can't have cubic inches and power without losing some mileage, just curious?
With proper tuning, you can actually get an increase in fuel mileage from a big bore if you can resist twisiting the throttle. Therein lies the problem...
