What is the freakin right size for the nut on my 08 axle nut? I measured 36.22 with my calipers, i just want to make sure that 36mm is the correct size. Also, should i get a 6pt or 12pt socket? Leave it to Harley to make me have to buy a new socket and leave it to sears to not even stock a 36mm socket.
I feel your pain man! I gouged up the threads on the shock jam nut when I installed my lowering kit. I thought no problem I'll just refer to the service manual for the proper thread/pitch size. Yeh right...nada. Luckily I had both english and metric pitch gauges and a tape measure and found out that if I owned a Lycoming aircraft motor I'd have more than likely had the 18mmx1.5 chaser in my tool chest. The service manual needs to address the various nut and bolts on these bikes to make life much easier.
I rube goldberged the stock stud and made it into a chaser and fixed the problem.
As for the axle size I use a 1 7/16" 12 pt. on a 3/4 breaker bar. I have no idea if the nut is metric since I had a socket that fit perfectly.
I believe plane's 1 7/16 is probably the correct "English" size.
I use a 36mm - 6pt., just because I had a cheap 3/4" drive metric socket set. Since a 3/4" torque wrench is a rarity, I use a 3/4" to 1/2" reducer, so I can use my 1/2" torque wrench. The torque is right at 105 ft. lbs. and my cheap socket does the job with no problems.
