I can relate to this. I got hit in the neck by a wasp at 70+mph! I imagine that is what getting shot with a tranquilizer might feel like!
Like a lot of people, I started out torn between looks and comfort. I am the sort that eventually chooses function over style. I ride my Bones way too much and it is the only bike I own so I needed it to be equipped for ANY situation. I eBay'd mine brand new for just over $200. Then I took it apart and had the hardware powder coated gloss black ($40). I got the new version of the mounting hardware that comes in black. Overall it doesn't look too bad and since it is detachable, I can pop it off for cruising around town. I thought about trying some other by other manufacturers but the fitment information for the Bones was very vague and I hated to buy something that wouldn't work in the end.
The downside is that it is a bit short for me and it can rattle my head at times. I wish I would have gotten a taller one cus I think those four extra inches would do the trick. I ride the 1925 sprung solo saddle so I do sit around an inch under stock but it is not quite enough.
How tall are you? I ask because I'm also looking at the short one but I'm 5" 10 inches and do not want buffeting. I had that on my last shield/bike and ended up drilling two holes, adding two strips of metal and raising the shield two inches. The wind then went straight over my head at Interstate speed. I don't want to be doing any drilling on my new 09 Crossbones. THANKS for any info.
ya i just went with a full face helmet last year on my bones, although it kept bugs and **** off my face having a windshield would help with rider fatigue due to the fact that your opened up like a parachute on the highway because of the mini ape- hangers, i am switching to a half helmet this year with a bandana around my face. Personally i think if i were to put a windshield on my bones i should have bought a heritage classic instead, becuase the next thing i would be thinking is "maybe i should get saddle bags?"
Yeah I just don't fit right on a hertiage or deluxe. The Cross bones gave me the leg room I needed. As for the shield it is only to keep the wind outa my chest on the Interstate. I use a 3/4 Zox helmet with a flip down shield for highway and rain or cold, flip up for around town or hot driving. Nicest helmet I have ever used. No bags for my Boner though. The dealer had installed a bunch of that crap I didn't need or want, I made them take it off before purchase. The one nice thing they did leave on was the quick disconnect real mounts for a black rack. Later when I get one if I'm heading to work I can bungie on a lunch box, around town with the 'ol lady no rack needed as she has huge saddle bags on her bike. See ya.
Well I got a shield for my xbones since I'll be putting on 3000kms solo soon. It does take the wind off my chest but the buffeting is INSANE. It's the low profile since I have a brawler seat and stand 5'10". The horizon constantly bobs up and down after 90km/h, and passing is a whole other story. My vision get so blurry I can not see if any cars are approaching at 130! I have to tuck right behind it so I can see where I am going. This is after changing helmets to a tiny, barely DOT approved non visor half lid.
I'm gonna try removing my tool bag off the fork and stuff it on the headlight behind the shield, blocking the wind that passes through that opening, and see if that helps.
I'm frustrated, but don't mind the look at all actually.

I agree that windshields can spoil the clean look. But, nearly all of them are detachable now. Like 5 seconds and you're back to the smooth lines. I used to commute 130 miles a day and it was a necessity. It looked out of place on my ride until I added the passing lamps and saddlebags.
That being said, I'd stay away from HD windshields. I went with the memphis shades and am extremely happy. Not only was it 215 dollars brand new for the glass and mounting hardware, the tilt on the windshield is adjustable so you don't get that awful buffeting that comes with most HD shields.

I actually had the exact same problem with the low profile windshield when I had it. Switched to the taller one & it is much better, but I still do get a bit. But I'm also 6' 4", so I could really use an even taller one.
I suppose your question depends on what your primary use of the bike is going to be. Like many here, I like the clean look of no windshield. But nothing beats one for long trips. And, after having ridden a rigid frame bike for 6 years and a few long trips, looking cool is not nearly is fun as riding with saddlebags and a windshield.
My advice, if you are going to get one for your Xbones, get the black quick detatch kit with the black windshield (get the tall one too). The chrome one looks dorky and its kind of a pain in the *** to take it apart and have it powder coated. If you have apes and want them forward then you'll have to spend time adjusting the angle to accommodate the shield when you want it on(and ALWAYS use a torque wrench on your riser bolts) Regardless of what bike you ride, the wind is going to buffet you...windshield or not...it just depends on direction and speed.
