To clean the crud out of your cables and keep them lubricated once a year I remove them from their controls. Get them as vertical as possible and either tape or cable tie a baggie atound the open end. The tighter you get it the less will leak. Put an inch or so of WD40 or similar in the baggie, let gravity work until all is gone and oil is running out the end of the cable. Do the same with a liquid graphite solution. You will be amazed at how easy your controls will work. Been doing it this was since the 70s. There may be a better way, but I'm too old to learn a new trick.

+1 on this I use the same techniqe but I use 3 in 1 oil. Not so much because it is better but you can buy a half of pint and pour a little in the baggie. It also works great on freezing throttle cables on machinery in the winter time. It's the best way to lube a cable that I know of. And don't forget to lube those brand new cables before you install them, especially if they are braided.
