I've done a 500 mile day and several 400 mile days this year and have had no problems with comfort.
I still have the stock seat on it and after 1500 miles or so on the bike it wasn't uncomfortable.
A bad back may make a big difference though, no back problems here, and I'm only 30 years old.

JC, put over 5000 on mine this year, with no problems at all. I think the biggest factor will be the severity of your back troubles. I still have the stock driver seat, however I did replace the passenger pillion with a bigger and more comfortable one. Hope this helps.
I have a firehouse coustoms backrest and a stock seat AND a bad back!! 1200 miles in a week no problems at all!! Also the backrest bolts right on in two minutes.. $104.00
I replaced the stock seat with a corbin (w/ rider backrest) < 6 months of owning the bike...couldn't ride more than 50 miles or so with the stock seat...had back surgery in '98 @31yo... so for me I figured out I can't ride any bike without a backrest. Corbin are good seats and I'm used to it now, but I can't say the same for the company...had many problems initially getting the thing to fit right, and they were no help to me....not sure if I would go with Corbin again...only cuz of my personal experience with the company...some say Mustang are good for the Deluxe's as well.... there's many posts on this forum about seats for the Deluxe... good luck!
I have sold many bikes because I wasn't comfortable. I love to ride and wasn't going to suffer.
Bars, seat, foot pegs all play a part.
I put 15000 miles on my night train. I bought it at the end of last November.
Even with the drag bars I am comfortable.
I don't think the suspension of the softail is going to be a problem at all.
I have scoliosis and an extra vertabrae which isn't fused.
Go out and rent one for a day or two before you buy.
